The Washington Post obtained a police scanner recording indicating that emergency responders had arrived at Graham’s home Saturday night and attempted to stabilize a man for transport to George Washington University Hospital. “Graham’s death narrows Republicans’ majority in the Senate, where they had held a 53-47 edge,” the Post adds. The New York Times: Mr. Graham was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994, before being elected to the Senate in 2002. He was re-elected to the Senate in 2008, 2014 and 2020. Last month, Mr. Graham won the South Carolina Republican primary in a bid to serve a fifth term in the Senate, fending off five challengers. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) can immediately appoint a sucessor to serve out Graham’s term until January. South Carolina will elect a new senator to a full term in November. Graham is not the only GOP senator who is unavailable this morning. Mr. Graham’s death comes as another influential senator, Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, is currently hospitalized for undisclosed health reasons.
