East Coast Shark Sightings Force Beach Closures as Summer 2026 Peaks

A sand tiger shark bit a Jones Beach swimmer on the Fourth of July weekend, and Rockaway Beach in Queens has closed 23 times since May with 16 shutdowns in the first five days of July alone. East Coast shark sightings are surging from Long Island to Connecticut as summer 2026 peaks.

Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steven Pearce says the state’s unprecedented drone network will provide the largest shark surveillance blanket ever deployed anywhere in the world. “This is a huge investment in shark surveillance,” Mr Pearce told Sky News host Jaimee Rogers. “A huge blanket of UAV drone surveillance never seen before anywhere in the world. “Our pilots are trained specifically to look for our target sharks, and that’s a bull shark, a tiger shark or a white shark.”
