KINGSTON, Jamaica—Rajindra Campbell broke the Jamaican men’s shot put national record for a second time this year after he threw 22.44m to win the event on the first day of competition at the 76th Boris Hanžeković Memorial at Sports Park Mladost in Zagreb, Croatia on Thursday.The meet is a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.Campbell broke the 22.34m mark he had set on May 23 at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China.On Thursday he led from the start but was overtaken by Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri in the third round before rallying in the fifth round with his best ever mark in competition.Fabbri was second with 22.21m and New Zealand’s Tom Walsh third with 21.42m.The meet will continue on Friday with five other Jamaicans taking part including Commonwealth Games double sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and Brianna Lyston going head to head in the women’s 100m.Two newly-minted national champions Stacey Ann Williams in the women’s 400m and Tajay Gayle in the men’s long jump as well as top 400m hurdles runner Rushell Clayton are also down to compete.-Paul A Reid
