'What is a woman?' Reform asked the question Plaid Cymru and the Left refuse to answer

'What is a woman?' It should be a simple question with a straightforward answer. Yet, if you are the Plaid Cymru Welsh Government, it is anything but. When my colleague and leader of Reform in the Senedd, Dan Thomas, tabled a question asking Plaid for their policy definition of a woman and a man, I expected a common-sense response. Instead, it took five days for them to ask for more time, and a further delay before admitting they do not have a single clear definition of male and female. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say The inability, or unwillingness, to provide a clear definition of what a woman is exposes a fundamental problem at the heart of Plaid Cymru, and increasingly parts of the political left. Their refusal to recognise the reality of biological sex undermines the very principle that women deserve legal protections because we are female.Women face risks and have needs that arise directly from our biological differences. Those differences matter. They are the reason the British Parliament created sex-based rights. This is not a complex philosophical debate. It is basic common sense. If you cannot define a woman, you cannot defend women. The Supreme Court has now unanimously settled the law. That judgment is not optional, and women’s rights are not negotiable. Governments have a duty to apply the law.Every person deserves dignity and protection under the law. But rights exist within a legal framework, and clarity is essential if those rights are to be upheld fairly and consistently.Last month, I led a Senedd debate entitled From Legal Clarity to Practical Reality: Implementing Women’s Sex-Based Rights in Wales. They deserve certainty that their rights to privacy, dignity, fairness and safety will be upheld in hospitals, schools, refuges, prisons, changing rooms and sport. For women and girls across Wales, this is not an abstract debate; it affects everyday life and public safety.Plaid Cymru appears more interested in avoiding difficult questions than providing clear answers. Yet, at the same time, they endorse initiatives such as aiming for a Senedd that is 50 per cent male and 50 per cent female while refusing to define what those terms mean.Plaid Cymru also calls for further devolution of powers over equality law and the criminal justice system. If a Government cannot command public confidence in how it applies the Equality Act today, why should the people of Wales entrust it with even greater powers over their fundamental rights? Could we in Wales have another Isla Bryson situation like Scotland if Plaid get their hands on those powers? The people of Wales expect politicians to deal with difficult issues openly and honestly. Asking for a clear definition should not require weeks of deliberation.Women are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for the law to be applied as the British Parliament intended and as the Supreme Court has unanimously confirmed.Reform UK Wales will continue to ask the questions others avoid. We believe in clarity, transparency, and the consistent application of the law. The people of Wales deserve representatives who are prepared to speak plainly and who will stand up for the rights of women and girls without hesitation. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
