Narrative Analysis: Name Calling

Planned before Albania’s protest movement began, the concert was intended to strengthen the country’s international profile. But public financing, free tickets and a radically changed political context turned it into a debate over image, accountability and the use of state power. Tirana Times, July 12, 2026 — When Kanye West appeared on stage in a specially constructed arena outside Tirana on Saturday night, the Albanian government achieved its immediate objective. The concert went ahead, the venue appeared full and images of a major international spectacle circulated widely on social media. Politically, however, the outcome may have been very different from The post Kanye West in Tirana: Has a Global Spectacle Become a Political Backfire? appeared first on Tirana Times.

There is an unfortunate tendency among American pundits and journalists to assume everything revolves around U.S. politics. Albania is only the latest case in point. In late May, protests erupted in Zvërnec, Albania, over plans by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to develop a sensitive environmental site into a multi-billion dollar accommodations. ICE Killing Of Salgado Sparks Outrage And Protest In Houston

Protesters shouted “ICE out of Texas” after Donald Trump’s ICE goons shot and killed Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as he was on his way to work. Salgado was not a criminal. He had been in the U.S. for 35 years and was close to obtaining legal residency, his family said, as per Reuters. His son said he learned about his father’s shooting from a video on social media. ’I recognized him immediately, not from his appearance, but from his voice, crying for help as he lay on the street, bleeding out,’ he said, choking back tears,” Reuters reported. This is Trump's America, y'all. As Andrea Thompson posted, DHS has claimed that Salgado “weaponized his vehicle” in an attempt to run over an ICE agent as they were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation in Houston. That’s the same dubious excuse ICE used for shooting and killing Renee Good in Minneapolis, in January. Yet, instead of proving its case, ICE has seized the evidence and kept it out of reach of local investigators and has no plans to do any investigation at all. In other words, DHS looks to be doing everything possible to cover up Good’s killing.read more

Trump’s Cheap Shot Sets Off Italian Pride Fight

Evelyn Hockstein / REUTERSPresident Donald Trump’s spat with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is already backfiring—and fueling a nationalist backlash in Italy.Trump has been attacking Meloni, one of his strongest allies in Europe, claiming that she was “begging” to take a picture with him at the G7 Summit in France last week. But in Italy, the remarks are being increasingly viewed not just as a slight to Meloni, but to the whole country itself.Meloni, until this point, had avoided any harsh criticism of Trump while leading Italy, but responded in a 30-second clip on social media, calling his assertions “completely made-up.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

NATO Meets in Turkey Amid Crackdown on Civil Society; Trump Praises Erdoğan & Considers F-35 Sales

Trump announced on Tuesday at the NATO summit in Ankara that he would lift U.S. sanctions on Turkey and is considering selling the country F-35 fighter jets. Trump made the comment following a lavish state dinner hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whom he praised as a “great leader.” The mayor of Istanbul and other Turkish politicians, civil society figures and journalists remain jailed on politically motivated charges. “Here in Ankara, and in Turkey more broadly, this NATO summit is not taking place in a climate of freedom. We saw, in the two weeks leading up to this summit happening, authorities in Ankara arrested over 200 people in dawn raids,” says Ruth Michaelson, a journalist based in Istanbul. “There has also been a protest ban enforced in Ankara, and that is a protest ban that extends even to leafleting.” Repression from the Turkish state has not been addressed during the summit; instead, “something that we’ve been hearing throughout the summit is that Turkey has this indispensable place in NATO,” says Michaelson.
