Leaving NATO Stronger As Putin Eyes an Attack

Storm clouds formed over the Gulf this week, as American forces retaliated against Iranian attacks on neutral shipping, but it was mostly sunshine and rainbows at the NATO summit in Ankara. Donald Trump had some tough comments about a few European allies, but overall, there was a lot of love in that room. A lot of unity. REVIEW: ‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’

It’s not often that you can use the word silly to describe a movie, but when you can, you might be talking about something special, something inspired. I don’t mean a movie that embarrasses itself by making a complete hash of its subject, causing you to roll your eyes and shake your head. I mean a movie that wants to be silly and still hold your attention and entertain you. It’s a fiendishly tough thing to pull off. A deliberately silly movie is a high-wire act. It has to evoke the real world to get us involved in the story it’s telling and then create its own bonkers reality—and once it does so, it needs to keep topping itself in the silliness department because otherwise it will run out of gas. GOP Primary Voters Remain Deeply Supportive of Israel, Poll Finds

Anti-Israel radicals are ascendant in the Democratic party, but Republican primary voters remain deeply supportive of the Jewish state, a Washington Free Beacon poll found. The survey, conducted in early June found that likely Republican primary voters prefer a candidate who supports a strong U.S.-Israel relationship by a margin of 57 percentage points and who explicitly denounces antisemitism by a margin of 52 percentage points. By the same token, survey respondents also said they were less likely to support a candidate who describes Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal, who takes steps to economically isolate Israel, and who votes against congressional resolutions denouncing antisemitism – by margins of 25 points, 43 points, and 43 points respectively. The Indispensable President

The Declaration of Independence, signed and issued to the public 250 years ago this month, was the banner under which the American Revolution was fought. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. The Declaration, the sheet anchor of American republicanism, as Lincoln called it, stated the ideals behind the revolution, but played little role either in starting or ending the conflict. The battles of Lexington and Concord, which ignited the war, had been fought more than a year earlier, in April 1775; the war would continue for another five years until it was settled in 1781 by the American victory at Yorktown. Without victory in the war for independence, the Declaration of Independence might have been relegated to a footnote in history. The post The Indispensable President appeared first on .

Founders With Feet of Clay

In December 1818, an 83-year-old John Adams—slow of step and weak of sight—was ushered into Boston’s Faneuil Hall to behold John Trumbull’s now-legendary painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence. The former president was said to have given his warm approval. He was probably lying. The post Founders With Feet of Clay appeared first on .

REVIEW: 'The Invite'

Bob Carol Ted Alice, made in 1969, tells the story of two couples, best friends who are navigating the changing mores of the 1960s in Los Angeles. Bob and Carol (played by Robert Culp and Natalie Wood) have gone semi-hippie; they go to New Age retreats, smoke weed, and have decided to practice radical truth-telling. Bob tells Carol he's had a one-night stand with a Berkeley master's student but it was only physical; she says she's okay with it because he was honest. Bob gets offended that she doesn't care. Then Carol sleeps with her tennis instructor; Bob gets jealous but is assuaged by an offer of free tennis lessons. The post REVIEW: 'The Invite' appeared first on .
