Dr. Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, an Indonesian geologist specializing in earthquake geology and geotectonics at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Research Center for Geotechnology, joins Megalithomania to discuss the challenges of dating ancient archaeological sites using techniques such as seismic imaging, geophysical surveys and LiDAR, particularly in a landscape profoundly shaped by tectonic activity. Andrew Collins and I first explored Gunung Padang with Danny back in 2015, witnessing firsthand the remarkable site that would later spark worldwide debate. In this interview we revisit that research, including the controversial publication—and subsequent retraction—of Danny’s paper on Gunung Padang. The paper was withdrawn not because of any evidence of data fabrication or misconduct, but because of the far-reaching conclusions it presented, making it one of the most contentious episodes in recent archaeological publishing. We also explore underwater sites that link with the ancient stories of Sundaland, the lost continent of Indonesia - and look at the remarkable Megaliths of Sumatra and Sulawesi that Danny has explored in depth.
