Brittany Burnette was used to caring for others as the director of a nursing home until she developed a condition that caused her bones to rot after taking the Covid shot. Mrs Burnette, 34, was working at a nursing home in her native Tennessee when the Covid pandemic hit in 2020. She watched patients die alone and missed her son's birthday out of fear of becoming infected and bringing the virus home with her. In January 2021, Covid vaccines became available and, feeling a sense of duty to protect her patients, she took the Pfizer vaccine. She experienced no immediate side effects, but in July 2021, Mrs Burnette developed 'unbearable' pain in both of her hips. She was told she had arthritis at 31 years old and had to use a wheelchair when the pain made it too hard to walk. Believing her pain was something else, another doctor ordered an MRI, which revealed Mrs Burnette's hip bones were literally rotting, and she underwent her first hip replacement in December 2021.Link

Australia urged to stop apologising and embrace national pride like the US
Sky News Senior Reporter Caroline Marcus believes Australians should take inspiration from the US and stop apologising for celebrating their national day. “I think it’s so sad that every year we have to have the same old tired debate about changing the date, their protest marches, even though they’re not representative, as we know from poll after poll of the majority view,” Ms Marcus said. “Australians do support Australian Day; they do want to keep it on January 6. “So many people have this guilt and this feeling of shame over the day.”

This week in PC games: Stardew Valley plus vampires, a lavish gamebook RPG, and Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, finally
Happy this week, all! Also: huge apologies to the World Cup organisers and teams for any matchside cosmic sabotage brought on by our struggle to feed the Maw. Truth be told, Mexico should have had last night's game in the bag, if only I'd topped up the Maw's feeding trough on Friday with another handful of Slay the Spire 2 stories. In its hunger, the creature broke containment, and fell upon the sacred realm of association football, kindling all manner of pandemonium. You may have noticed that half of Mexico's goal shots vanished in flight, for example, leaving behind a turquoise haze and the aroma of burning locusts. You may have noticed that Jude Bellingham had six more legs than is customary, for a champions league player. Or perhaps you didn't notice any of that because you were too busy thinking about this week's forthcoming PC game releases. Here are a few I've got my eye on. Read more

The Mets Have Turned It Around 360 Degrees
The crud-ass New York Mets were able to manage a series split on the road against division-leading Atlanta during the long weekend, overcoming severe bullpen issues for 10-9 and 7-6 victories on Sunday and Monday. But before any fan could even begin to think about letting their guard down or their hopes up, New York returned home to kick off a series with the Royals and deliver another entry in this year's contest for Most Frustrating Loss. Again, the Mets offense did their part, but Kansas City beat the brakes off some minor-league relievers to win the game 16-12. The Royals play 500 miles from the nearest Defector blogger, and they don't possess the largest payroll in baseball, so we haven't given them a fraction of the attention we've devoted to the Mets. But they've sucked just as bad, albeit in a less spectacularly disappointing way. They spotted the Mets a 9-4 lead through four innings; Carson Benge opened the scoring on a three-run, three-error slapstick display that, defensively, is basically what you do when you want your 6-year-old nephew to feel like he hit a home run. https://youtu.be/XtdNefccOKU?si=1EF7_VoBGGvDyEJmt=40
