China has detained two Japanese nationals suspected of smuggling export-restricted goods, possibly rare earths. The arrests by China could add to the strained relationship between Asia's two largest economies, which have been on the rocks since Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi publicly supported Taiwan last year. Reuters reports that Japan's top government spokesperson confirmed that one Japanese national had been detained in China's port city of Dalian on May 18, and another on May 25.
