Colombia beats Ghana to complete WC round of 16 lineup

Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 to claim the final place in the last 16 as the FIFA World Cup round of 32 concluded in Kansas City on Friday, reported Xinhua. The victory sent Colombia into the World Cup round of 16 for the fourth time, after reaching the stage in 1990, 2014 and 2018. It also extended Colombia's winning streak against African opponents at the World Cup to five matches. Colombia took the lead in the 14th minute when substitute Luis Suarez burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross for Jhon Arias, who tapped home his first goal of the tournament. Colombia was more threatening throughout the match, producing 20 attempts and eight shots on target, while Ghana failed to register an effort on target. Ghana, making its first World Cup knockout appearance since reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, was unable to find a way back into the match. Colombia will face Switzerland in the round of 16 in Vancouver, Canada, on July 7.

Even if they couldn’t find another goal that their superiority clearly warranted, Colombia were deserved winners and look more than capable of at least matching their previous best result at the 2014 World Cup when they reached the last eight.
