Ukrainian suspect acted for state in Nord Stream sabotage: prosecutors
A Ukrainian man suspected of taking part in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines acted on behalf of state authorities, German prosecutors said on Thursday, reported Xinhua. The Office of the Federal Prosecutor said the man, identified as Serhii K., was an officer in the Ukrainian army in 2022. After the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in late February that year, he and other military personnel allegedly developed a plan on behalf of Ukrainian state authorities to destroy the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. Serhii K. is suspected, as a co-perpetrator, of committing a war crime by attacking civilian objects, causing an explosive blast, destroying buildings and disrupting public utilities, the prosecutors said, adding that the suspect led the plan and a group formed by several professional divers, a skipper, and an explosives expert. The prosecutors said Serhii K. and his accomplices used a yacht to transport large amounts of high-performance explosives, which could be used for military purposes, to international waters near the Danish island of Bornholm. On Sept. 26, 2022, the group detonated several explosive devices, which they had placed on the gas pipelines on the seabed, causing large gas leaks. Serhii K. was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and was transferred to Germany the following November, the prosecutors said.

Israeli Attacks On Lebanon Nearly ‘Derailed’ US-Iran Talks in Switzerland: Pakistan Foreign Minister
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar tells Al Arabiya in an exclusive interview that Israeli attacks on Lebanon nearly derailed efforts to bring the United States and Iran back to the negotiating table. Dar said technical talks held in Switzerland marked the second phase of a recently announced US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Three working groups discussed Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions and frozen assets, and the situation in Lebanon. He also said no transit or service fees would be imposed on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the current 60-day period. #Iran #USIranDeal #Trump #Tehran #WashingtonDC #Pakistan #IshaqDar #MiddleEast #Diplomacy #ForeignPolicy #IranNuclearDeal #NuclearTalks #Sanctions #Lebanon #Israel #StraitOfHormuz #Hormuz #Shipping #GlobalTrade #RegionalSecurity #PeaceTalks #Switzerland #AlArabiyaEnglish #AlArabiyaNews #BreakingNews #WorldNews

Araghchi says officials and footballers defend Iran's dignity
Araghchi says officials and footballers defend Iran's dignity Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said the country's officials, negotiators and footballers are all engaged in defending the honour and dignity of the Iranian people, sharing a social media post that combined images of schoolgirls killed in a February strike with scenes from the World Cup. From the football pitch to the negotiating table to the battlefield, every step we take as Iranians is part of a larger struggle: defending the honor and dignity of our dear people, Araghchi wrote. The post came as mediators reported progress in US-Iran talks in Switzerland and after Iran drew with Belgium in a World Cup group-stage match. Araghchi also referenced the victims of the missile attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls' School in Minab on 28 February, in which about 160 people, most of them schoolgirls and teachers, were killed. Trump calls Ukraine's strikes on Russia an escalation that could help end the war
US President Donald Trump has described Ukraine's intensified strikes on Russian territory as an "escalation," though he believes they may help push Russia towards ending the war. Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries have triggered a fuel crisis now being addressed at the highest levels in Moscow. Trump has also announced the transfer of Patriot missile technology to Kyiv, alongside a NATO assistance package worth €140 billion. Russia says Western involvement will only prolong the conflict, as drone and missile strikes from both sides continue. UN Chief Says Civilians 'Must Be Protected' as Pakistani Strikes Kill Dozens of Afghans
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday called for “an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians” after Pakistani airstrikes killed and wounded scores of Afghans, including women and children.Pakistani forces bombed targets in Afghanistan's Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces and launched a ground invasion of the neighboring nation. The attacks—which Afghanistan's Taliban government called cowardly and an atrocity—reportedly killed at least 28 civilians and wounded 49 others. We call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and continue to stress that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, Guterres said in a statement read in New York by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric. Dujarric also said that the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) “just confirmed that many civilians were killed and injured in these airstrikes carried out by Pakistan, and that “humanitarian colleagues tell us that the latest attacks have also reportedly triggered displacement, and humanitarian partners on the ground are assessing needs and preparing to provide emergency assistance.”Paktia elder Adam Khan told Agence France-Presse that those killed in one of the strikes were innocent civilians, including children, elderly people, and women sleeping in a house. Pakistani officials say the military operations are aimed at militant groups that it says operate from Afghan territory and launch attacks into Pakistan, not at Afghanistan's government. Islamabad accuses Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan—also known as the Pakistani Taliban—and Jamaat-ul-Ahrar of having recently attacked Pakistani security forces and civilians.Last October, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a now-imploded ceasefire after weeks of border clashes that killed dozens of civilians and wounded hundreds more.

Iran Makes It Clear Who Controls The Strait Of Hormuz
For the umpteenth time, Trump has claimed that the United States won his war against Iran and that we were in control of the Strait of Hormuz. And for the umpteenth time, Iran demonstrated that this was simply not true. CNN's Erin Burnett reported that Iran has taken credit for an attack on a cargo ship that was going through the Strait. But the way in which she did report the news was remarkable. It was almost like she was as sick of Trump's crap as the rest of us are: It's a cargo ship that had just passed through the Strait of Hormuz. It was attacked by Iran. A strike that leaves any sort of an agreement between Trump and Iran as shaky and amorphous and undefined, and how many synonyms can I come up with on that, as it already was, is in question tonight. And what we know about this attack is that a cargo ship was hit by a one-way attack drone, according to the Wall Street Journal, which also. Reports that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps was responsible. Tehran is just showing the obvious here, though, but this action, speaking louder than any word, showing that yes, they are still in control of the Strait of Hormuz. They can shut it down whenever they want, despite what Trump just claimed. read more

Iran ceasefire back on 'for now' after Bahrain & Kuwait struck
This past weekend saw the US and Iran trade multiple attacks, straining an already delicate ceasefire. A residential building in Bahrain was heavily damaged in an Iranian attack, its Interior Ministry said, and a Qatari citizen died because of shrapnel resulting from “the military operations in the area,” according to Qatar’s Interior Ministry. CNN’s Paula Hancocks has the latest on the renewed strikes, and CNN global affairs analyst Brett McGurk and retired Air Force colonel Cedric Leighton break down the “new normal” of the fragile US-Iran ceasefire. U.S. and Iran agree to halt strikes and meet this week, U.S. official says
The U.S. and Iran agreed to stop attacking each other, according to a senior U.S. official, as the two sides plan to meet Tuesday in Qatar's capital to work out their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz. Why it matters: The ceasefire is barely 11 days old and already on shaky ground with renewed strikes by both sides and President Trump's threat to restart the war and complete the job.The renewed fighting was sparked by competing interpretations of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war — especially its terms on the Strait of Hormuz. The latest: We decided to stop all the kinetic activity, a senior U.S. official tells Axios, using the military's term for strikes and other attacks.A second U.S. official tells Axios both sides will stand down for now and that vessels can move freely as technical talks are set to continue. Both U.S. officials and a third source with knowledge confirmed Tuesday's planned meeting.Catch up quick: Under the MOU, Iran committed to make its best efforts to allow safe passage of commercial vessels through the strait. In return, the U.S. lifted its blockade of Iranian ports.During negotiations in Switzerland last week, the U.S. delegation — headed by Vice President Vance — agreed with Iran to establish a hotline between the U.S. military and the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), Iran's military command, to coordinate traffic in the strait. As of Saturday, the hotline still wasn't operational even as Iran started claiming, again, that ships need to coordinate passage.State of play: The Tuesday talks were originally set to happen in Switzerland to address Iran's nuclear program, a source with knowledge of the talks said. The escalation moved them to a different venue and refocused them on the Strait of Hormuz.Nick Stewart, who heads the U.S. technical team, is expected to participate in the talks, according to a U.S. official and a source with knowledge. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.Editor's note: This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

'Boy, was I wrong': Embarrassed conservative admits CNN was right about Trump's deal
An embarrassed conservative columnist admitted that CNN had accurately reported on the details of President Donald Trump's proposed deal with the Iranian regime, even though the columnist refused to believe it. Becket Adams, a conservative columnist for The Hill and National Review Online, wrote in a new op-ed for The Hill on Monday that the president's cosplaying as war chief has been disastrous. He also slighted the so-called Memorandum of Understanding that Trump and the Iranians allegedly agreed to, which punts talks about the Iranians' nuclear program in exchange for allowing the global sponsor of terrorism to immediately resume selling oil. Adams argued that the deal showed there’s nothing left except to concede that the U.S. was done in by a few mines.Boy, was I wrong, he wrote. Adams claimed he took issue with the way CNN framed the agreement, saying he didn't believe the Iranian regime would think to close the Strait of Hormuz again. On Saturday, the Iranian military announced it was doing just that in response to continued fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The cable network later updated its reporting to explain that 'Trump administration officials briefed lawmakers on long-standing military plans to address a major disruption to the Strait, according to one official, but that multiple sources familiar with the session said there was no indication there were any near-term solutions.' I criticized this framing as well, given that the clarification was way off from the first claim, Adams claimed. Again, I apologize. CNN’s sources were clearly correct. This iteration of the Trump presidency is exactly as inept as advertised, he added.

Tanker struck in Hormuz as Iran, US trade attacks in worst escalation since peace deal
A tanker reported being struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, Britain's maritime security agency said, after the United States and Iran each launched strikes in the worst escalation since they signed an interim peace deal. The warring sides each accused the other of violating the agreement reached two weeks ago to end the four-month-old conflict. Washington said it hit Iranian targets overnight, while Iran said it had struck targets linked to U.S. forces on Saturday in response.Saturday's attack on a tanker in the strait followed another on a cargo ship on Thursday that triggered the latest escalation. Iran has made a fresh bid to assert control over the world's most important energy shipping route, which has begun to reopen over the past two weeks after months of disruption.Britain's UKMTO maritime security agency said the tanker hit on Saturday had sustained damage to its bridge, with all crew reported safe. TheJoint Maritime Information Center, run by a coalition of navies protecting shipping, said it had raised its security threat level as a result of recent incidents.Iran has not directly commented on reports of specific attacks on ships. But Iranian state television reported that the Revolutionary Guards had fired warning shots towards unspecified vessels attempting to pass through channels not approved by Iran, and that this was now prompting other ships to seek Iranian permits before attempting to cross the strait.Earlier, Iran's foreign ministry said it had launched defensive attacks on U.S.-linked military targets, while Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy's regional headquarters, reported an Iranian drone attack. The U.S. military did not immediately respond to the reports.

The Tribute Vice Pays to Virtue
This is a great piece by Rosa Brooks that discusses something I’ve been obsessing about for some time: the end of the international order with nothing to replace it. She analyzes its demise and correctly places the blame where it belongs — on everyone. It’s a fascinating, clear-eyed look at what got us here. So who killed international law? All the passengers on the International Express. The U.S. security state hollowed it out; liberal internationalists overextended it and generated a sovereigntist backlash, one with genuine democratic force. International lawyers spoke more to one another than to global publics. The Security Council immunized its permanent members. The global south, tired of an international legal system that encoded colonial hierarchy while preaching universalism, withheld the political support that might have saved it. Russia struck obvious blows, while China focused on patient subversion. And under Trump, the United States—once the proudest supporter of the rules-based international order—contemptuously rejects the idea of being bound by any law at all. At the end of Murder on the Orient Express, detective Hercule Poirot allows the multiple killers to go free. After all, the victim had it coming. And at least to some extent, the same could be said of the international legal order. Still, it would be a mistake to celebrate its demise. As a domain for moral reasoning about politics, international law was always imperfect. But it gave us a shared language, a discursive terrain in which states understood they had to operate. However arbitrary or
