Ireland takes over the EU presidency as analysts ridicule its defence spending - Europe's lowest at 0.2 percent of its GDP. But contributions to European security should not be measured by spending on arms alone: and Ireland is the case in point.

Marine Le Pen conviction: Far-right leader still cleared to run for presidency

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen says she will run for president in 2027 and appeal a court verdict handed out earlier in the day that upheld her conviction for embezzling EU funds. She was given a three year prison sentence but would only serve one year under house arrest, and pay a 115,000 dollars fine. The court also reduced her ineligibility to 15 months, clearing the way for her to run in next year’s elections. Al Jazeera's Natacha Butler reports from Paris. Seismic Shift: DSA and Mamdani-Backed Pro-Palestine Democrats Sweep New York Primaries

Mayor Zohran Mamdani may be the new kingmaker of New York City politics. In a sweeping affirmation of his affordability-focused agenda, all three congressional candidates endorsed by Mamdani in a set of contested Democratic primary elections declared victory Tuesday night. Manhattan and the Bronx’s Darializa Avila Chevalier and Brooklyn’s Claire Valdez and Brad Lander were all joined on the campaign trail by the progressive NYC mayor in the weeks leading up to election night. Like Mamdani, Avila Chevalier and Valdez are members of the NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which backed their campaigns. We speak to John Tarleton, editor-in-chief of the New York City local independent newspaper The Indypendent, about the insurgent left of the Democratic Party and the potential national ramifications of the Zohran-DSA machine. Two of the races also functioned as a referendum on the growing split in the Democratic Party over Israel/Palestine. While the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC funneled an estimated 50 million into their staunchly pro-Israel opponents’ campaigns, Avila Chevalier and Lander refused to take any funding from pro-Israel groups and consistently emphasized their support of efforts to restrict U.S. military aid for Israel. “If you ignore the cause of Palestinian liberation, you do so at your own peril,” says Tarleton.

Ninety-two percent of Israelis think Iran has won war, new poll finds

Ninety-two percent of Israelis think Iran has won war, new poll finds When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initiated the US-Israeli war on Iran at the end of February, Israel's objectives appeared clear: dismantling Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and bringing about the collapse of the Iranian government. Now, following the signing of an agreement between Iran and the US, with negotiations between the two countries continuing in Switzerland, a new poll has found that 92 percent of Israelis believe Iran has won the war. The survey, conducted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, found that Israelis overwhelmingly view the war and subsequent deal with the US in a negative way, with 83 percent of those polled saying the campaign has weakened Israel's long-term security and 86 percent feeling negatively about the outcome. This public perception mirrors the feelings of Israel's political and military elite, many of whom see the end of the war on Iran as representing a turning point that could weaken Israel's regional influence. The poll found that 72.5 percent of Israelis do not believe Netanyahu when he says Israel achieved significant gains and removed an existential threat, a feeling that also reflects the growing uncertainty around the prime minister's future.
