French health ministry confirms Ebola virus in doctor who worked in Congo

A positive case of Ebola virus has been identified in France in a doctor traveling back from Congo, the French Ministry of Health said Wednesday. The individual, who has not been identified, returned from a humanitarian mission in one of the virus transmission zones in Congo and was taken into care at a specialized facility in France. The person is in stable condition, the ministry said. The Congolese health ministry said Wednesday there are 1,094 confirmed cases of Ebola, including 277 confirmed deaths. The Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no vaccines or treatment, has been the worst ever in terms of case numbers in its first month.Officials admit there could be far more cases they don't know about and the peak of the outbreak, which was declared May 15, could still lie ahead. All precautionary measures, including the patient's isolation, were taken upon their arrival in France, the health ministry said, adding that their transfer to a hospital was carried out under secure conditions to prevent any risk of contamination. An in-depth epidemiological investigation is underway to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient, the ministry said, adding that a regional health agency will closely monitor them during a 21-day home isolation.

Supreme Court Strips Protections for Haitian & Syrian Immigrants in "Racially Inflected" Decision

Thousands of Haitians and Syrians living in the United States are newly at risk of deportation after the Supreme Court ruled to allow the Trump administration to strip them of “temporary protected status,” or TPS. The program, designed for foreign citizens of countries the U.S. government believes are too unstable or dangerous to be returned to, often due to natural disasters or war, has been a major target of attack by the Trump administration and its anti-immigrant agenda. “We are looking at the catastrophic deficit in the workforce in the United States if we allow this deportation machine and cruelty to take effect,” our guest, Haitian Bridge Alliance’s Guerline Jozef, says. “This is just part of the Trump administration’s efforts to feed the detention and deportation machine and essentially halt immigration,” adds Lupe Aguirre of the International Refugee Assistance Project. “It’s about maintaining their campaign promises to root out people that they see as undesirable.”

Death By A Thousand Cuts

The only good news there is that New Mexico, one of our poorest states actually improved. The Republicans have landed on the lie that this is all because they’ve uncovered fraud in the system. Dr. Oz says that they know there’s rampant fraud because they’ve found that many of the accounts show no claims during the year. I’m not kidding. He apparently thinks that means that there are no people in the country who don’t see a doctor until they need to. I guess we’re all supposed to be running to the doctor all the time, whether we’re sick or not. And if we’re healthy, we don’t need insurance. Or something. He’s obviously an idiot. And to think he was a cardiologist before he became a reality TV star and Trump toadie. The truth is obviously that a lot of people can no longer afford to have health insurance because Trump has tanked the recovery, and then the Republicans refused to extend the subsidies. I don’t know how many of the people who lost their insurance voted for Trump, but if they did, they did it to themselves. Too bad about all the other people who didn’t make that choice.
