How the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska spawned the Kremlin’s myth of the ‘spirit of Anchorage’ — and why it collapsed

Putin’s meeting with Trump in August 2025 gave rise to a new term in the arsenal of Russian diplomacy and propaganda: the “spirit of Anchorage.” The claim was that during the Russian president’s visit to Alaska, Russia and the United States had reached certain agreements on peace in Ukraine — agreements that were directly shaping events on the front and in diplomacy. For a full year, Russian politicians and pro-Kremlin journalists insisted that following the “spirit of Anchorage” was the key to breaking the deadlock in peace talks. After Putin rejected Zelensky’s public peace proposal — and as a fuel crisis triggered by Ukrainian strikes intensified — it became definitively clear that the “spirit of Anchorage” had evaporated. Trump acknowledged as much, and within days so did Putin. Writing exclusively for Meduza, political scientist and researcher at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs Sergejs Potapkins explains how the “spirit of Anchorage” came into being — and why it lasted as long as it did.

Putin Says Russia Rejects Western Attempts to Influence Sovereign Nations

Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken out against what he described as Western attempts to interfere in the affairs of sovereign nations, arguing that Moscow rejects the principles underlying the so-called rules-based international order. Putin's message was delivered to participants of the Primakov Readings international forum and was read aloud by presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. According to the Russian leader, many countries increasingly question a global system that, in his view, allows powerful states to exert pressure on others and influence their political decisions.

When things get dicey in Moscow, Vladimir Putin tends to drop out of sight for a while, retreating to one of his residences and canceling public events. Only his closest aides know how he spends his time during these absences, which can go on for days even in the middle of a national crisis. The Kremlin does its best to fill the vacant airtime on state TV with pretaped footage of the president, waiting for him to reemerge and declare that everything remains under his control.

Ukraine strikes 2 oil refineries in Russia: Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that Ukrainian forces had carried out overnight strikes on two oil refineries in Russia, reported Xinhua. In a post on X, Zelensky said one of the targets was the Slavyansk oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region, about 300 km from the frontline. Local media reported that the refinery has an annual processing capacity of some 4 million tons of oil. He said another refinery in Russia's Yaroslavl region, about 700 km from the Ukrainian-Russian border, was also targeted, but did not give further details. Zelensky said the strikes were aimed at weakening Russia's ability to sustain its war effort. Each of our long-range sanctions means fewer resources serving Russia's war machine, and another step toward peace, he wrote.
