Courtois emotional after injury forces early exit in quarter final against Spain
Belgium suffered a major setback in the second half of its FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Spain on Friday (local time), after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off with an injury, according to news outlet USA Today, reported ANI. With the match level at 1-1, Courtois went down clutching his left thigh midway through the second half. Belgium's medical staff treated the Real Madrid goalkeeper on the field, and although he briefly returned to play following the hydration break, he soon indicated that he could not continue. Senne Lammens replaced Courtois in the 71st minute. The veteran goalkeeper appeared visibly emotional on the bench, raising concerns that his World Cup campaign could be over regardless of Belgium's result against Spain. Earlier in the match, Belgium brought an end to Spain's record-breaking defensive run at the FIFA World Cup after Charles De Ketelaere scored to snap the longest clean-sheet streak in the tournament's history. De Ketelaere found the net in the 41st minute to level the score at 1-1 after Fabian Ruiz had given Spain the lead in the 30th minute of the quarterfinal clash, according to OptaJean X handle. The goal ended Spain's remarkable run of 649 consecutive minutes without conceding in the FIFA World Cup, the longest such streak in the tournament's history Spain's defensive record had stretched from their final group-stage match against Japan at the 2022 FIFA World Cup through their unbeaten run in the 2026 edition before De Ketelaere finally breached their defence, according to OptaJean X handle Belgium's equaliser not only brought the match back on level terms but also brought an end to one of the most remarkable defensive records in World Cup history.

Argentina continue to show ‘heart’ but flaws are apparent before Switzerland clash
Close calls against Cape Verde and Egypt show Scaloni’s side are vulnerable, despite all the brilliance of Lionel MessiIt is among the defining moments of this World Cup: Lionel Messi wandering the pitch in Atlanta with tears rolling down his face. Minutes earlier, Argentina had been down two goals to Egypt and on the brink of elimination in the last 16. Messi had missed a penalty and was set to bear blame for the result. Instead, the Argentina legend created the same magic he always seems to, spearheading a miraculous, three-goal swing in just over 10 minutes and pushing the Albiceleste into the quarter-finals.And now he was crying. And so were his teammates. And so was his head coach, Lionel Scaloni, who could not contain his emotion in a post-game interview. His own players, the coach says, have taken to calling him el llorón. The crybaby. “I can’t even look at you,” Scaloni told a touchline reporter, in tears. “I’m sorry. I’m obviously very emotional. What a group of players, brother. I’m sorry. That’s it, I have to go.” Continue reading...

Neymar calls time on Brazil career after World Cup elimination
EAST RUTHERFORD, United States (AFP) -- Brazil superstar Neymar indicated Sunday that his international career was over after the five-time World Cup winners went out of the tournament in the last 16 at the hands of Norway.Neymar came on as a late substitute at the MetLife Stadium and scored a penalty deep in injury time, but that was a mere consolation after Erling Haaland netted twice for Norway, and Brazil lost 2-1.The 34-year-old is Brazil's all-time top scorer and ironically he got his first goal for his country in the same stadium, in a 2-0 win against the United States back in 2010.I tried and I tried. Now it's over. It began here and it ends here, Neymar said in a brief exchange with a journalist from Brazil's Globo Esporte after the game.He collapsed in tears when the final whistle went, and had to be consoled by teammates.Worn down by injuries in recent years, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player, now back at first club Santos, was a surprise inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil squad for the World Cup.Injury prevented him from featuring in Brazil's first two group games at the tournament, but he did come on in the 3-0 win over Scotland in Miami which completed the opening round. That was his first international appearance since October 2023, but his only other appearance in the United States came Sunday against Norway.
