'Chaos Will Follow': Sotomayor Blisters Court As Trump Gets 'Power Unknown' To Kings
Justice Sonia Sotomayor accused the Supreme Court of giving President Donald Trump power unknown even to the English Crown. The 6-3 ruling Monday in Trump v. Slaughter wiped out a 91-year-old precedent that let Congress protect the heads of independent federal agencies from being fired at will. In holding otherwise, Sotomayor wrote in dissent, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, the Court gives the President a power unknown even to the English Crown against which the Founders revolted, elevating him above his once-coequal branches by transforming a duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed into a license to act in defiance of those very laws. Perhaps worst of all, the Court today forgets its place, she continued. Today's majority, however, decides that it knows better: better than even Hamilton, Story, Webster, Holmes, Brandeis, Frankfurter, and Rehnquist. Today, the majority replaces 90 years of proven, workable practice with a half-baked theory of executive power that is simultaneously all encompassing yet also subject to necessary but undefined exceptions, she wrote. The one thing that does appear to be clear going forward is that chaos will follow. read more

How Do We Fix This?
I like to see actual plans for the reforms that are necessary to save the country once Orange Julius Caesar is out of the picture. Josh Marshall addresses one of the most important: the Supreme Court: Regardless of the details of reform, I have seen no reform proposal that is at all serious which doesn’t include immediately adding new seats to the court. A total of 13 would have one justice per federal circuit court. There’s a logic and a history to that. But I’m not sure 13 is enough. In any case, there’s no serious reform that doesn’t first include adding justices because that is the only immediate way to break the corrupt power of the current majority. The key additional reform would be to have cases heard by randomly selected panels of judges. So perhaps there are 20 justices on the Court and cases are heard by panels of seven. It’s a bit like how it works on the appellate courts, but there would be no en banc review. Why would this be good? It’s critical to make the outcome of cases less predictable. At the moment, the right knows they’ve got five or six “sure thing” votes for basically anything they want that isn’t completely absurd on its face. Meanwhile, the corrupt justices know they are entirely insulated from any accountability. This uncertainty about who will hear a case reduces the incentive to game the process with concocted cases. More importantly, I think it creates an incentive

Trump 'on the brink' of receiving historic shellacking from Supreme Court: law professor
The Supreme Court is “on the brink” of ruling on major cases regarding President Donald Trump’s “most audacious gambits,” Bloomberg reported Sunday, and one law professor is predicting the outcome may bode poorly for the commander in chief. The Supreme Court is set to rule this week on two cases that will determine whether Trump can eliminate birthright citizenship and remove leaders from independent federal agencies — as he attempted with Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook.William Baude, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Constitutional Law Institute, predicted things wouldn’t go in Trump’s favor, in spite of the Supreme Court’s conservative agenda and recent history of helping expand the president’s executive power.“It seems likely the court is going to rule against the administration,” Baude said, according to Bloomberg.Despite birthright citizenship being enshrined in the Constitution in 1868 with the 14th Amendment, Trump has long sought to eliminate the constitutional right, and has lashed out at “dumb judges and justices” for their critiques of his efforts. The president has also falsely claimed that the United States is the “only country in the world” to have such a right. While the Supreme Court has done much to expand Trump’s executive power, including with a recent ruling that allowed his administration to expedite the deportation of as many of 1.3 million migrants, justices have also refuted the president on several occasions, perhaps most notably by ruling that his so-called reciprocal tariffs were implemented unlawfully.

EU top court upholds €4.1b antitrust fine against Google
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on Thursday upheld a 4.125-billion-euro antitrust fine imposed on Google over abusive practices linked to its Android mobile operating system, reported Xinhua. The ruling dismissed an appeal by Google and its parent company, Alphabet, against a previous judgment of the General Court of the European Union (EU), which confirmed that the U.S. tech giant had abused its dominant market position through restrictions related to Android. The CJEU held that the General Court of the EU had correctly assessed the anticompetitive effects of Google's practices. It found that the pre-installation requirements and anti-fragmentation agreements were capable of restricting competition and strengthening Google's dominant position in the Android ecosystem. The case stems from a 2018 decision by the European Commission, which found that Google had required smartphone manufacturers to pre-install its Google Search app and Chrome browser as a condition for licensing certain Android applications. The Commission also found that Google's anti-fragmentation agreements restricted the development of alternative Android versions, limiting competition. The Commission originally imposed a fine of 4.34 billion euros. In 2022, the General Court of the EU partially annulled one aspect of the decision concerning certain revenue-sharing agreements but upheld the Commission's core findings and reduced the fine to 4.125 billion euros. The CJEU also rejected Google's arguments that its conduct was objectively justified and upheld the General Court of the EU's recalculation of the fine.

Actor Jussie Smollett and ‘Queer Eye’ Star Show Off New Romance
REUTERS, David Swanson, REUTERS, Wade PayneEmpire actor Jussie Smollett appeared affectionate with Queer Eye star Karamo Brown in Los Angeles on Monday, just weeks after Smollett called off his engagement. The two were seen having lunch with Brown’s mom, running errands and hiking through the Runyon Canyon, TMZ reported. The pair was not shy about showing some sweet PDA moments, with Smollett at one point seen playfully cupping Brown’s chin. The apparent romance comes just weeks after Smollett and his former fiancé, Jabari Redd, called it quits on their three-year relationship. Meanwhile, Brown was previously engaged to director Ian Jordan, whom he dated for 10 years before they split amicably. He was in another relationship with photographer Carlos Medel until they broke up in February 2025. Smollett has been a controversial figure ever since he was accused of staging a fake hate crime against himself in 2019. He was convicted in 2021 on five felony counts of disorderly conduct for making false reports to police, but the conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Illinois. The court did not rule on his innocence. Read it at TMZRead more at The Daily Beast.

How has the Supreme Court shaped America? | The Economist
Today’s Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, is one of America’s most conservative in a century. It has curbed, or overturned entirely, many longstanding precedents. The last court that was this consequential was, in fact, a liberal one. It was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren, who saw the role of the Supreme Court in American life very differently to other Chief Justices. #America #SCOTUS #history The Economist is marking America’s 250th birthday with a special series exploring the United States’ complicated relationship with its founding ideals. Marine Le Pen sentenced to house arrest and FOUR-year electoral ban for mishandling EU funds
Marine Le Pen has been sentenced to house arrest and a four-year electoral ban for mishandling EU funds. An appeals court has upheld the French politician's conviction for embezzling European Parliament funds, but may have cleared the way for her to run in the 2027 election. This comes after the right-wing leader, her party the National Rally and 23 co-defendants were found guilty of embezzling money in March 2025, stemming from an institutional complaint dating back more than a decade. The court ruled she is eligible to run in next year's presidential election, by reducing her ban on running in a public office to just 15 more months. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say However, the court has made this reality difficult for Ms Le Pen, as it has ordered her to wear an electronic tag for a year - something which she said repeatedly she will not do. It is understood senior National Rally party members have attempted to persuade her to run anyway, but she has refused, so far. Ms Le Pen has transformed the right-wing party from a controversial, fringe political movement to the largest single part in the French Parliament. The 2027 elections would have been her fourth attempt at the presidency. However, her protege Jordan Bardella is polling higher than Ms Le Pen, so it is understood he will likely run at National Rally's leader in the election next year. MORE TO FOLLOW... "Rule of Law vs. Rule of Billionaires": Supreme Court Says Trump Can Fire Regulators, Except at Fed
In a 6-3 ruling this week that overturned nine decades of precedent, the Supreme Court granted President Donald Trump the power to fire and replace officials at independent government agencies like the Federal Trade Commission. But in a separate 5-4 decision, the justices ruled that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook can stay in her job as she challenges Trump’s efforts to fire her. The seemingly contradictory rulings suggest a two-tier system of regulation, says Alvaro Bedoya, a former FTC commissioner who was fired by Trump last year. The independence and stability of the Federal Reserve is important to “billionaire Wall Street Bankers,” and therefore remains protected, says Bedoya. “But then you have this whole series of other agencies that keep your toys safe, that keep health insurers from robbing people blind, that keep supermarkets from merging to make milk, eggs and beef even more expensive. The court said that all those regulators can report directly to the president and be entirely beholden to his whims.”
