Dr Siti Fatimah Zaharah Zulkapli’s experience serving as a volunteer doctor in conflict-affected regions underscored the critical importance of a country’s ability to produce its own medical devices and medicines. Witnessing firsthand the suffering of patients caused by medicine shortages, as well as the challenges of treating and diagnosing illnesses due to the lack of essential medical devices, strengthened her resolve to help ensure Malaysia would never face a similar situation, particularly during global supply chain disruptions triggered by geopolitical conflicts or pandemics. “I served as a volunteer doctor at a refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece, in 2015 before joining a humanitarian mission at Blossom Healthcare Centre in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2016.
