1,000+ dead in France from heat as US faces July 4th heat wave

Half of all Americans are facing prolonged, dangerously hot temperatures from an intense heat dome as they head outdoors to celebrate the country’s 250th Independence Day. The temperatures in some spots in the eastern US, like New York City and Washington, DC, could be the hottest in over a decade, and numerous high temperature records are likely to fall in the coming days. This is after swaths of Europe were also under a heat dome, a vast area of stagnant high pressure that acts like a lid on a pot, trapping heat. Wildfires in southern Spain kill at least 11

Eleven people were killed in a wildfire in Almeria in southern Spain, with 150 firefighters working to put out the blaze, Andalusia's head of emergencies said, adding that authorities had told residents to stay in their homes and that the deaths appeared to have occurred when people decided to try to evacuate in their cars. If one is all it takes to ruin your cunning political strategy, I do not think it is so cunning. The reaction from Democratic leaders this week was mixed, at best. Some regard Mamdani not as a saviour, but an existential threat. Centrists warn of electoral suicide, fearing that a leftward lurch will doom their chances in swing states in November’s US midterm elections. For Third Way, a centrist Democratic thinktank in the tradition of Bill Clinton, the New York results were a disaster. Matt Bennett, its executive vice-president of public affairs, said: “It’s a bummer, and it’s a problem – not because there’s any danger of losing those districts to Republicans, but because those kinds of candidates and their ideas and rhetoric can be weaponised against Democrats running in tough races. We’ve seen this before, with ‘Defund the police’, and we’re worried about it happening again.” The concern was echoed by Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman turned Democrat and Trump critic. He warned: “Democrats have given Republicans a huge fucking gift. Republicans will do what I used to do: one crazy lefty says ‘defund the police’, and then Republicans and conservative media tag the whole party with ‘defund the police’. They’re gonna try to make the whole party out to be crazy, America-hating, democratic socialists and, to a degree, it’ll work.”

U.K. Political Crisis: PM Keir Starmer Resigns & Palestine Action "Terrorism" Sentencing of "Elbit 4"

Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as the United Kingdom’s prime minister and leader of the Labour Party following growing pressure from within his own party to step down. During his time in office, Starmer faced mounting opposition over his embrace of austerity measures amid a cost-of-living crisis in Britain, as well as his brutal crackdown on Palestine solidarity protesters. Former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is widely expected to become the next prime minister. Some leaders of the British left have warned Burnham may do little to shift from Starmer’s policies, including his position on Israel. Starmer “really lost support in the party because he was perceived as too right-wing for it and because he was too boring. He lacked charisma,” explains our guest, the Australian British human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson. Robertson also discusses Britain’s Court of Appeal’s ruling that the government’s proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization is lawful, making it a criminal offense to belong to or support the organization. Four Palestine Action activists were recently sentenced as terrorists over their involvement in a 2024 raid on a British factory operated by one of Israel’s largest arms manufacturers, Elbit Systems.

As thousands of Great American State Fair attendees “wander the streets” of Washington, D.C. in an apparent attempt to wait out severe weather, a tense exchange occurred that involved a man wearing “a patriotic t-shirt” calling for another’s deportation, The New York Times reported Saturday.Fair attendees were ordered Saturday evening to evacuate the National Mall after a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued, an order that initially sparked chaos as several hundred attendees refused to leave. While President Donald Trump has vowed to continue the festivities – even if it means waiting until “2 o’clock in the morning” – attendees may still have hours to wait.“The restaurants in the area, largely fine dining, are packed. People seem exhausted and irritable, and it’s causing some tension,” wrote the Times’ Aishvarya Kavi, reporting from the National Mall.In one tense exchange, Kavi described an incident that sparked one man to call for another’s deportation.“Two men riding electric scooters veered too close to a couple on the sidewalk, [prompting] a short but heated exchange of words,” Kavi wrote. “Behind the couple, a man in a patriotic t-shirt said, ‘Deport them! Another one, among many: LORENZO SALGADO ARAUJO CAME TO THE UNITED STATES thirty-five years ago—a few years too late to benefit from the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, popularly known as the “Reagan amnesty.” He worked in construction. By the 2000s, he was a small business owner who provided jobs and work for other men. They would drive to the North Houston suburbs and build houses. His dream was to build his own home for his family one day—a dream he achieved. On Tuesday morning, Lorenzo was picking up workers as usual shortly after 6 a.m. when he was confronted by ICE and killed. He was 52 years old. This man had been here for 35 years, had a business and raised three American sons who all went to college. He had no criminal record and was known as a responsible family man. The community is heartbroken. ICE is saying he was violent and they shot him in self-defense, but nothing indicates that’s true. They have no proof and have detained and probably deported the witnesses who were in the car when it happened. This story is getting national attention as it should. Minneapolic tactics aren’t over. IT’S STILL HAPPENING, they’re just keeping a lower profile. Markwaaaayne is pushing for higher quotas, he just wants them to be kept under wraps. I’m a little bit frustrated that so many progressives have failed to put this at the top of their list of moral atrocities being committed by the United States
