Russia's Growing Military Presence in Africa Reaches Strategic Indian Ocean Gateway
Mozambique has asked Russia for military assistance in its fight against terrorism, with the experience gained by the African Corps in Mali shaping expectations of what Russian support could provide. The request highlights Moscow's expanding security role across Africa and underscores the strategic importance of southeastern Africa in the broader geopolitical landscape. Mali Experience Shapes Mozambique's Security Request Western intelligence services have long sought to portray the operations of Russia's African Corps, which replaced the Wagner Group in Mali, as unsuccessful. At the same time, separatist Tuareg forces from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Islamist militant group Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) launched coordinated attacks on several major Malian cities this year, including Gao, Anefis, Sévaré, and Mopti. Despite repeated predictions of the Malian government's collapse and speculation about a possible French return to the country, joint operations conducted by the African Corps and the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have repelled the main terrorist offensives. Government forces recently reopened access to the town of Anefis after breaking a prolonged blockade, reinforcing state control over key areas.

Russia says Kostiantynivka has fallen. Kyiv claims it still holds the city. Both are wrong.
In recent days, alongside reports of drone and missile strikes on cities, factories, and gas stations, the state of the front lines has suddenly become a major topic of discussion — apparently because Donald Trump has returned as a mediator in the negotiations. Vladimir Putin told him about the fighting in the ruins of Kostiantynivka, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region — a key city the Russian president claims his army now holds. Ukraine’s General Staff responded that Kostiantynivka remains under the control of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. To back up their claims, both sides released videos of their troops inside the city, some recorded by opposing troops on nearby streets. In reality, neither Moscow nor Kyiv is right: Russian forces haven’t captured Kostiantynivka outright, but Ukraine doesn’t control the city either, though its troops still hold positions there, including in the city center. And while the Kremlin jumped the gun with its announcement, the situation in Kostiantynivka and elsewhere in the Donbas continues to deteriorate slowly for Ukraine’s military.

Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso withdraw from ICC
Amnesty International warned that the recent move by Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to submit formal notifications of withdrawal from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) paints a bleak future for thousands of conflict survivors, threatening their right to truth, justice and reparations. The three countries recently formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a mutual defense and economic confederation that seeks to reject the political influence of Western powers. The AES countries are currently engaged in coordinated military actions to beat back surging jihadist offensives, which have resulted in massive civilian casualties across their shared borders. The Sahel war has contributed to an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, and resulted in multiple massacres and extrajudicial killings committed by state security forces and paramilitaries with Kremlin ties, as well as by insurgent groups. Not Peace Talks – Victory Talks
Russia has already lost the war and Vladimir Putin’s isolation and evident fear point to a regime on the precipice. The Kremlin leader’s distance from his own officers, the precedent set by Yevgeniy Prigozhin’s mutiny, and the army’s self‑inflicted failures, show a system rotting from within. Ukraine, having proven its resilience, should now pursue nothing short of victory – secure borders, accountability, and justice – negotiated from a position of strength.

Russia says it has taken five villages in Ukraine
Russia's defence ministry claims to have captured five villages in Ukraine's eastern regions, including four in Kharkiv and one in Donetsk. However, Ukraine's President Zelensky vehemently denies Russia's assertion of taking the strategically vital city of Kostiantynivka, calling it another fabrication. This city is crucial for Ukraine's defence line in the industrial Donetsk region, and its capture would significantly aid Russia's northern advance.
