Can we get rid of small talk, please?

We’ve all been there, stuck on an airplane, cornered at a party, getting verbally attacked by the lowest form of communication: small talk. These conversations are somehow scripted yet without substance, and to the person on the receiving end, they’re often a burden. It feels like a way for someone who has little to say []

Kash Patel lashes out at MS NOW for criticizing his 'lavish lifestyle'

FBI Director Kash Patel responded defensively to criticism from MS NOW's Hayes Brown regarding his expensive leisure activities, partly funded by taxpayers. In his op-ed, Brown highlighted Patel's extensive personal time during official travel and cited an internal schedule from his Italy trip obtained by The New York Times. The document revealed long periods for personal time and cultural activities. The article includes an editorialized image of Patel, 46, surrounded by an expensive BMW, a golf bag, snorkeling gear, an FBI jet, and a jet ski. Patel reacted angrily on X, suggesting his jet ski is gold-plated and cursing at the publication: Your job is to lie. Mine is to protect the American people, and business is good! Brown cautioned, Patel's lavish lifestyle could make him a target for frustrated Republicans seeking easier alternatives to criticizing Trump directly. “He runs the risk of becoming a lightning rod, drawing down the wrath of every frustrated Republican who knows it’s much easier to savage the people around Trump than aiming at the president himself,” Brown wrote.Patel has also faced scrutiny for allegedly using FBI jets to attend his girlfriend's music performances in Nashville, for his behavior in the 2026 Winter Olympics and for snorkeling at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii.Watch the video below. When Less is More

Let’s face it: No one wants to be criticized, but constructive criticism can be a positive tool when delivered correctly. Although it’s natural to dislike criticism, a growth-oriented person will come to appreciate and value it. Constructive criticism or feedback has many benefits, among them increased self-awareness and clarity. At the end of his life, [] The post When Less is More appeared first on Aish.com.

FIFA Makes Good And Right And Not At All Corrupt Decision To Rescind Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Suspension

The USMNT was the talk of the soccer world in the aftermath of its triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina last Wednesday. Most of the conversation was about the latest amazing U.S. performance in a tournament full of them, and the growing consensus that the Americans should be considered overwhelming favorites to go ahead and win the World Cup. However, a sizable portion of the discussion also centered on the referee's scandalous decision to show U.S. striker Folarin Balogun a totally unfair red card for an accidental challenge. The brave Americans were prepared to suffer this miscarriage of justice in dignified silence, and to face Belgium without Balogun. Thankfully, FIFA, an organization known for its commitment to fairness and ethics, stepped in on Sunday and suspended Balogun's one-game suspension. To a small, blinkered minority, FIFA's action smacks of favoritism and corruption. What they hell! you might hear one such person say, in a suspiciously French-ish or Dutch-ish accent. They can't do that! The guy got a red card, he has to pay the price! Ah, but surely this person will admit—or would admit, if they weren't blinded by impotent rage over the Americans' impending ticker-tape parade—that the initial call on the field was completely fraudulent, both on the merits and procedurally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuaS3jUAark

This Ain’t The 1960s, Kids

It’s a new political galaxy Most of the people I encounter engaged in regular protest of the Trump dictatorship are older. Most are retired. We have the flexibility. Solidarity builds community. At the same time, like the gerontocracy atop the Democratic Party, many first engaged in politics in the 1960s. They have experience. They’ve seen things. A lot of things since then. But their tactical approach still carries echoes from their youth. The songs, the slogans, the in-your-face, get angry, get loud approach to political activism. But on some level, we fail to recognize that the political ground has shifted. It ain’t the 1960s anymore, kids. It may be political muscle memory, but is what you did back then effective in the 21st century? Timothy Snyder last week called for a “joyful coalition.” Dan Pfeiffer wrote recently, “People don’t want to join an angry, self-loathing movement. Taking back our country should be a righteous and joyous fight, so let’s have a little fun along the way.” I still have a collection of over 200 “pass it on” email forwards from the days when your right-wing uncle sent them, propaganda from the days Snopes collected them under the heading “Inboxer Rebellion.” A dozen years ago, I observed about their tone: Once you’ve had your daily dose of in-box outrage, conservative reader, all these propaganda pieces ask is that you “pass it on” to everyone you know. So now that you’re good and angry — and if you’re a Real American —

When mentorship becomes bullying: The hidden abuse of power in academia

Mentorship has always been regarded as one of the defining pillars of academia. It is through mentorship that knowledge is transferred, research capacity is developed, and future scholars are nurtured. Every successful academic can usually point to one or more mentors who provided guidance, challenged their thinking, opened professional doors, and helped shape their careers. Effective mentorship is therefore one of the most valuable investments a university can make in sustaining academic excellence. Unfortunately, mentorship does not always fulfil this noble purpose. In some instances, it gradually degenerates into a subtle but damaging form of bullying, where authority is exercised not to develop younger academics but to intimidate, control, or exploit them. Because such behaviour often occurs within relationships characterised by significant power imbalances, it frequently remains hidden from public view. Many postgraduate students and early-career academics endure these experiences in silence, believing that speaking out may jeopardise their academic progression or professional future.
