Saudi Arabia's 1.3 million pomegranate trees produce 39,700 tons in summer

RIYADH — More than 1.3 million productive pomegranate trees in Saudi Arabia produce over 39,700 tons annually, meeting growing consumer demand during the summer season. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture said that pomegranates are among the Kingdom’s promising economic crops. As part of its “Sweet in Season” campaign, cultivation is concentrated in Asir, Makkah, Tabuk, Qassim, and Al-Baha, with varying production levels in other regions. The campaign aims to introduce consumers to the Kingdom’s diverse local fruits and their peak seasons throughout the year, promote national products, raise quality and safety standards, and improve the marketing of locally produced fruit during harvest seasons to support farmers and increase their financial returns. The ministry noted that Saudi pomegranates are known for their diverse varieties suited to the local environment, most notably Taif, Hijazi, Wonderful, and Eversweet. Locally, the fruits are consumed fresh and used to make juices, ice cream, and desserts. The ministry provides support and services to empower farmers, including agricultural guidance, technical support, financing facilities, and the adoption of modern farming technologies. It also helps strengthen supply and marketing chains through seasonal programs and local exhibitions, ensuring national products reach consumers quickly and easily.
