Pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat for the most sacred day of Hajj as temperatures top 40C

Over 1.5 million of Muslim pilgrims have gathered on Mount Arafat in Mecca for the Day of Arafat, the most sacred day of the Hajj pilgrimage, without which a pilgrim's Hajj is considered void. The site holds profound historical significance: it is where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon more than 1,400 years ago, and where a key verse of the Holy Quran was revealed. Pilgrims endure temperatures exceeding 40C to fulfil one of Islam's five pillars. Concerns remain, however, over whether rising Gulf tensions could disrupt the safe return of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travelling through the region.
