Oklahoma farmers benefit from an assessment limit

Perhaps the strongest objection to an assessment limit over the last two years came from the Kansas Farm Bureau, which was concerned that a limit “could potentially reduce property taxes for certain classes of property on certain years when the appraised value of that property exceeds 3” and prompt a shift in the tax burden. The Best

If I didn’t like him before (I did) I would love him now: Mamdani’s administration just funded New York City’s first-ever pet food pantry program. 750,000 in the FY2027 budget, specifically to help pet owners who can’t afford food for their animals. Another 750,000 goes toward affordable spay/neuter services. 1.5 million total, aimed at keeping people and their pets together. Here’s why it matters: NYC animal shelters took in over 16,000 animals last year. Nearly 10,000 were strays. Another 6,500 were owner surrenders — people who loved their pets but couldn’t afford to feed them or get them basic vet care, and had to give them up. Animal welfare advocates had been pushing for this for years, asking for 15.3 million to fully fund pantries, spay/neuter clinics in every borough, and a real animal welfare office. They got a fraction of the ask, But it’s the first time the city has put dedicated dollars behind the idea at all. No family should have to choose between rent and feeding their family — pets included. This is a start.

Childcare bill blows another hole in Labor’s budget

Sky News host Jaimee Rogers claims Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s $3.6 billion childcare wage deal is the latest costly commitment putting pressure on the nation’s finances. “The road to a budget blowout is often paved with good intentions. The NDIS is proof of that. Now there are warnings the childcare sector could be heading down exactly the same path,” Ms Roers said. “The Albanese Government committed $3.6 billion to a childcare wage increase. Subsidising 60,000 childcare workers for another 18 months. “This increase wasn't in the budget. And this isn’t the only hole in the budget from this week. “To put the childcare costs in perspective, the government is selling defence assets for about $1.8 billion, which looks like a weekend garage sale next to this 18-month childcare pay rise. “The sale of 67 defence sites will pay for half the cost of this childcare deal.”

Chicago Hemp Tax up in Smoke – Chicago Contrarian

That argument had a certain Chicago logic. The products were already being sold. Consumers were already buying them. The ordinary sales tax already applied. A separate hemp levy would have recognized the reality of the market while extracting revenue from it. ... But (Mayor Brandon) Johnson’s tax plan had a weakness. It looked like City Hall was monetizing a public health concern before proving it could control it.
