House Speaker Mike Johnson was swiftly fact-checked after he claimed in a tweet that President Donald Trump is the ONLY one who could bring Iran to the negotiating table amid the ongoing war.Johnson published his post after Trump announced earlier in the day that a “peace” agreement with Iran had been “largely negotiated” following conversations with several world leaders. Trump said the proposed deal, which he described as still awaiting final details, would be announced soon and would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz.Johnson wrote:“President Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran — the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism — to the negotiating table.We are greatly encouraged to learn a PEACE DEAL in Iran is underway — and look forward to learning more about the specifics. Under President Trump’s leadership, our nation is stronger, more respected on the global stage, and safer than ever before.”However, an X community note beneath Johnson's post points out that former President Barack Obama and other world leaders have been able to get Iran to the negotiation table through diplomacy rather than military action.It points to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement reached between Iran, the P5+1 nations—China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—along with the European Union. The note explains that the deal was designed to ensure Iran’s nuclear program remained peaceful and highlights key milestones, including Adoption Day in October 2015 and Implementation Day in January 2016.The note also emphasizes that the International Atomic Energy Agency verified Iran’s compliance with major nuclear commitments under the agreement, which then led the United States and the EU to lift certain nuclear-related sanctions.
