Down the Web Rabbit Hole With a Hammerhand

Alan Levine, CogDogBlog, Jun 24, 2026 This is a longish discussion of McLuhan's idea of a tool as an extension of the self, which then of course can be applied to media. Today, it can be applied to AI. So when we say 'AI is a tool' we're not limiting our imagination - the ceiling of what tool literacy can imagine - we are instead inviting ourselves to explore how a human and an AI can be (dare I say it?) a system. Now I'm not sure Levine meant his discussion exactly that way, but this is what follows from the text. And I question both McLuhan and that reading. I used to consider the question of whether a social network is an extension of the neural network (which is essentially the Siemens interpretation of connectivism). But I see them as two separate networks, with a process of communication (essentially, emergence and recognition) between them. The McLuhan argument is a nice metaphor. But it should not be taken literally. Web: [Direct Link] [This Post]

WATCH: Sanmerna provides $2million assistance to high school-bound students

The Sanmerna Foundation has awarded 2 million in scholarships and bursaries to more than 15 students from Balmagie and St Jude’s primary schools as they prepare to transition to several traditional high schools. Both institutions serve inner-city communities, where many parents continue to grapple with the rising cost of education and the financial demands of preparing their children for high school. Through this initiative, the Sanmerna Foundation said it is proud to recognise and reward students who have demonstrated academic excellence, discipline, and determination despite their circumstances. The Foundation said it remains committed to empowering young people through education and providing meaningful support to families as they work to create brighter futures for their children.“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives. At Sanmerna Foundation, we believe that when students work hard and excel, they should be encouraged, celebrated, and supported as they move forward,” said Paige Dixon, Project Manager of the Sanmerna Foundation. The Foundation also noted that the initiative is not only about financial assistance, but about sending a message of hope to children and families in underserved communities.“These children have shown that excellence is possible regardless of background or circumstance. Our hope is that this contribution will ease some of the burden on parents while reminding every student that their hard work matters and that their community is standing behind them,” said Robert White, Director of the Sanmerna Foundation.

'A great day to remember the male role model in our lives': Campaigner urges Britain to embrace Father's Day

Men's campaigner James Ray has called for greater recognition of fathers and male role models, arguing that Britain needs positive male influences more than ever.Speaking on GB News on Father's Day, the author said the occasion was an opportunity to revive the lost role of male advice. “We need healthy male role models,” Mr Ray began, adding: “If you can't find them in your own dad, my suggestion would be to go and find them in another dad or another male.”He suggested reviving the traditional role of godfathers and mentors, encouraging people to seek guidance from respected men in their communities.“Try to find somebody in your life that you admire. A male role model for all of us, but especially for young men.”The author argued that society often focuses on the negative behaviour of men while overlooking positive examples.“There's a huge amount of positivity, Mr Ray continued.“The greatest influence hero you're likely to meet is somebody close in your neighbourhood. Today's the day to be proactive.“People should think today: who should I find in my life who could help me?”WATCH THE FULL CLIP ABOVE Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
