Gaza doctor Hussam Abu Safia appears before Israeli court after more than 530 days in detention
A Palestinian doctor has appeared before Israel's Supreme Court after more than 530 days in detention. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arrested by Israeli forces in December 2024 during a raid on the medical facility. He has reportedly been held in solitary confinement and denied medical treatment. According to his lawyer, Nasser Odeh, Dr. Hussam remains in solitary confinement at Nafha prison. During his court appearance on Wednesday, he appeared via screen, handcuffed and shackled. Odeh reported that the court refused to remove the shackles. His client did not receive medical treatment nor the medications he needed because of a chronic illness. Odeh stated that Dr. Hussam continues to suffer severe back and neck pain as a result of an assault, and is experiencing vision problems because his glasses were confiscated and not returned. Odeh also noted that signs of skin diseases on his hands have spread widely in sections holding political prisoners due to medical negligence. Despite repeated appeals to Israeli courts to compel the prison administration to provide necessary treatment, Odeh and other advocates allege that the Israeli authorities are deliberately neglecting this in order to oppress Palestinian detainees.
