Football supporters clash in Lahti, 48 held

Police arrested 48 people after a clash between the supporters of two football teams in Lahti, a municipality under Päijät-Häme region, about 100 kilometres from Helsinki on Saturday afternoon. Police said that the supporters of HJK (Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi) and FC Lahti locked into the clash at Paasikivenaukio area at about 12:10 p.m. before a football match scheduled for 3:00 p.m. as a sequel to quarrel over fixture of the match. The supporters threw pyrotechnic flares to each other and ignited pyrotechnic flares during the clash and damaged shattered windows and outdoor furniture. Some of them used mask to cover their faces. Responding to an alarm police rushed to the spot and arrested a total of 48 people to bring the situation under control. Most of the detainees were Finnish citizens and one citizen each from Liechtenstein, Poland, Italy and Austria was also among them. No human casualty was reported in the clash, and police did not disclose the number of the injured people. The arrested people are facing investigation into suspected assaults and illegal masking.
