Rail freight traffic drops by 9% in 2026 Q1
A total of 7.5 million tonnes of goods were transported in freight transport in the first quarter of 2026, which is 9 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter in the last year, according to Statistics Finland. The transported goods corresponded to 2.1 billion tonne-kilometres. The number of tonne-kilometres in rail freight transport decreased by 12 per cent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile, a total of 21.4 million trips were made in railway passenger transport in in the first quarter of 2026, which is 3 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year The trips covered 1.3 billion passenger-kilometres. The number of passenger-kilometres on rail decreased by one per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
