Chao’s In China, McConnell Might Not Even Be Conscious

This is one of those stories where the when and the why are the key issues. Mitch McConnell is not in the greatest of health, which makes sense since he’s 84 years old and the mid-eighties are an age bracket that a great many Americans do not exceed. In McConnell’s case, he recently had a

The problem with evidence production on AI in education

Ben Williamson, Code Acts in Education, Jun 30, 2026 I'm not going to dispute Ben Williamson's argument here. It is entirely plausible that much of the 'AI in Education' (AIED) research is, as he says, junk science. What I will dispute the the suggestion - not made, but assumed, I guess - that this is new. While it is true that we are seeing meta-analyses at an industrial rate and scale, this has been a trend for some time, certainly for as long as I have been a researcher, and the same case has been made - does the name Charles Ungerleider ring a bell? Did initiatives like the Campbell Collaboration solve the problem? No - here we are 23 years later, with the same old problems assessing the impact of a brand new technology, suffering from the same old delusion that we know what we want from education, as there is an all-seeing 'we' in that statement. Does a hammer produce better learning outcomes? That would depend very much on the discipline. Web: [Direct Link] [This Post]

MAGA-Curious CBS Boss Plots Massive Risk as Backlash Spirals

Leigh Vogel/Getty Images for Uber, X and The Free PressBari Weiss is considering the risk of a high-profile interview with The New York Times to try to calm the firestorm engulfing her leadership of CBS News. The 42-year-old has stayed mostly quiet as anger has built over her MAGA-flavored overhaul of the network and, in particular, what critics describe as her gutting of the storied investigative program 60 Minutes.https://x.com/bencrellin/status/2070269577603293530?s=46Weiss has been weighing an appearance on the Times’ podcast The Daily with Michael Barbaro as her interviewer, according to Status. ‘Really serious issue’: ABC blasted for turning into pro-Palestine political advocacy platform

Jewish Community Member Marnie Perlstein says the ABC transition into a “political advocacy platform" is a “really serious issue”. “I think our national broadcaster ceased to be a balanced news outlet and actually has morphed into a political advocacy platform which really just supports the pro-Palestinian cause,” Ms Perlstein told Sky News host Chris Kenny. “If you’re someone who went and studied journalism or did a communications degree at any Australian university over the last three decades, it’s not surprising because you would’ve walked out of there with a degree in anti-Israel bias. “Of course they [ABC] are going to deny most of what they’ve been accused of. “Yes, they have made mistakes, and they have admitted to one mistake with the story about the babies, but there have been repeated mistakes made by the ABC that haven’t been corrected. “The reporting is always one-sided.”

We Can't Say Who It is, HOWEVER...

The writers do keep coming up with new plotlines. I'll give them that.WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans with obesity are eagerly awaiting a powerful new drug from Eli Lilly called retatrutide, which has demonstrated bariatric-surgery levels of weight loss. Some aren’t even waiting for approval from the Food and Drug Administration, instead racing to acquire it through sketchy means. But STAT has learned that Eli Lilly and the FDA have allowed one person to gain access to the drug through the FDA’s “compassionate use” program, a pathway that gives patients with serious and immediately life-threatening medical issues access to experimental treatments. This person was a 79-year-old man at the time the request was made in April, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Those sources, who requested anonymity due to fear of reprisals, said it drew the interest of top health officials, suggesting the person receiving this drug was well connected.Hopefully this unapproved drug doesn't have any unfortunate side effects, like toxic flatulism, criminal stupidity, or sudden agonizing death syndrome.

Engineering failure likely behind Pfizer project scare

Major renovations on aging buildings require delicate structural work, particularly when developers add floors, cantilever new sections or redistribute loads through an existing frame. Structural engineers say those projects demand extensive analysis to ensure existing structures can safely support new weight and altered load paths. When something is overlooked in the design, engineering or construction process, the consequences can be severe. “There’s a lot of structural analysis that has to go on. If that goes on carefully, everything should work out the way the engineers planned it,” said real estate attorney and structural engineering expert Barry LePatner. “If they fail []This article originally appeared on The Real Deal. Journalist Speaks With Mitch McConnell's Neighbor, This Is What She Had To Say

It seems that every time we turn around now, we are left with far more questions than answers regarding the ongoing medical situation surrounding former Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell. On the 14th of June, a full three weeks ago now, news broke that the 84-year-old senator had been hospitalized. Independent Capitol Hill journalist Desiree Townsend was the first to break the news, with McConnell's team quickly following with an extremely vague statement that confirmed the senator had been hospitalized but omitted any details about his status, condition, or even a reason for the hospitalization. By the following week, additional details came to light when explosive emergency dispatch audio went public, revealing that dispatchers were called to McConnell's residence for a cardiac arrest, where they performed CPR on an unconscious individual. Since then, while speculation has swirled, we have heard nothing but crickets regarding any formal confirmation of Senator Mitch McConnell's health. As such, people are rightfully beginning to wonder if the Kentucky lawmaker is even alive. read more

RHR: Preserving Cognitive Function As You Age, with Tommy Wood

In this episode of Revolution Health Radio, Chris Kresser is joined by neuroscientist and physician Dr. Tommy Wood to explore how cognitive function can be preserved—and even enhanced—as we age. Dr. Wood challenges outdated ideas about inevitable cognitive decline and reframes dementia as a largely preventable, multifactorial condition. The conversation covers the historical roots of Alzheimer’s disease, why “one-size-fits-all” drug approaches have failed, and how lifestyle, environment, and brain use interact to shape long-term brain health. Dr. Wood introduces his 3S model of brain health, explains why retirement may be a mismatch for brain biology, and breaks down the roles of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and cognitively demanding activities in building lifelong cognitive resilience. US appeals court strikes down key part of Florida law restricting campus race and gender discussions

Ron DeSantis’s Stop Woke Act suffers another legal setback, with the state accused of ‘puppeteering’Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter emailA federal appeals panel struck down a significant chunk of Ron DeSantis’s so-called Stop Woke Act on Tuesday, delivering another rebuff to the Republican Florida governor’s efforts to stifle free speech in higher education. In a scathing order, judges of the 11th circuit court of appeal said by a 2-1 majority that the higher education component of the law – which prevented college and university professors teaching or sharing thoughts on concepts of race and gender – breached the free expression rights guaranteed under the US constitution’s first amendment. Socialist "earthquake" leaves Democrats reeling

House Democrats were left stunned on Tuesday night after two of their colleagues — including the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — lost primaries to left-wing challengers. Why it matters: The New York primary results are poised to double the bloc of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in Congress, something that is not sitting well with some moderates. People who do not support the DSA wring their hands at cocktail parties, while the DSA is organizing, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), the co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, told Axios. Another centrist House Democrat, speaking on the condition of anonymity to offer candid analysis, called the results an earthquake and a huge defeat for Democratic leadership. It was a tough night, said Rep. Greg Meeks (D-N.Y.), a close ally of leadership and the chair of the Queens County Democratic Party, told Axios.
