1,000+ dead in France from heat as US faces July 4th heat wave

Half of all Americans are facing prolonged, dangerously hot temperatures from an intense heat dome as they head outdoors to celebrate the country’s 250th Independence Day. The temperatures in some spots in the eastern US, like New York City and Washington, DC, could be the hottest in over a decade, and numerous high temperature records are likely to fall in the coming days. This is after swaths of Europe were also under a heat dome, a vast area of stagnant high pressure that acts like a lid on a pot, trapping heat. Dozens Drown as France’s Heat Wave Turns Deadly

Gonzalo Fuentes / REUTERSFrance’s ongoing heat wave has turned deadly, with at least 40 people drowning over the past five days. Soaring temperatures pushed many residents to seek relief in lakes, canals, and other unsupervised swimming areas. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the death toll during an emergency Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, describing the number as a “tragic scourge.” Officials said most of the victims were young people, including many teenagers, swimming in bodies of water without lifeguards or safety supervision. Marina Ferrari, a government official in France, warned that swimming in unsupervised areas can be especially dangerous during extreme heat events. The fatalities come as France endures one of its most intense heat waves in history. More than half of the country remains under the highest-level heat alert, with temperatures expected to reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Paris and as high as 109 degrees in parts of central France. Weather officials said France also recorded its hottest night since national measurements began in 1947. Forecasters attribute the extreme conditions to a powerful “heat dome” that has trapped hot air across much of Europe. Read it at The New York TimesRead more at The Daily Beast.

Everything Is Political

Western Europe has been sweltering under a heat wave, and quite a few people have died as a result. The heat wave is unusual, but the phenomenon isn’t: every year, lots of Europeans die from extremes of heat and cold, far more than in the United States. And European climate deaths vastly exceed deaths in the U.S. from gun homicides, which many Europeans like to decry. A sane response to

Heat domes are not unusual, but are being supercharged by the human-driven climate crisis. 0:00 France: 1,000+ deaths linked to heat 0:19 Half of Americans brace for intense heat 3:10 How to stay safe in the heat 5:33 Why extreme heat kills 489,000 people a year 10:13 'No one is safe from heat' Watch 24/7 live news with CNN Headlines: https://bit.ly/4eIvlTr #News #heat #weather
