Masking a physical replica of Space Cadet Pinball
Anyone who used a Windows PC in the late 1990s remembers 3D Pinball for Windows — Space Cadet, the spaceship-themed table that shipped with the operating system. Australian maker CNCDan is building a real, physical version of it from scratch: 3D-printed mechanisms, laser-cut acrylic, solenoids fired by code, and even working wormholes that grab the ball with magnets and spit it back out. — Read the rest The post Masking a physical replica of Space Cadet Pinball appeared first on Boing Boing.

The next drug lab is in orbit
Space, which have been largely dominated by rockets, satellites and astronauts up until now, is gearing up to welcome a relatively new player — drugmakers — with the acceleration of commercial space vehicle race across the globe. As microgravity in space allows proteins to grow into larger and more uniform crystals, it helps scientists better understand the three-dimensional structures of disease-related proteins. This helps drug discovery by giving an accurate picture of the shape drug molecule

"The combinations are in the trillions": Star Wars Galactic Racer’s creative director on speeder specialisation, storycrafting, and having “a bit of a smash”
“It's okay to give people a bit of a smash,” Star Wars: Galactic Racer creative director Kieran Crimmins reassured me, after I asked the ex-Criterion Games dev whether rubbin’ is as viable a way of racing as it was in Burnout, the rowdy racing series his former home’s arguably best known for. I don't think we'd ever really want to make an arcade racer without some of that fun in it. Read more

Scientists Create First Synthetic Cell
This is kind of wild. CBS News, Scientists at the University of Minnesota say they've made the first synthetic cell that can complete a life cycle, a major breakthrough that could lead to innovation in the medicine and engineering fields. Called SpudCell — a play on the first space satellite Sputnik — it is made entirely from chemical components but can grow, divide and replicate. Quanta Magazine explains: For the very first time, biologists packed nonliving components into a cell-like membrane, piece by piece, and witnessed the bag of molecules start to behave like life. The lab-made synthetic cell grew, replicated its DNA, and divided, demonstrating the basic functions of a cell cycle. It’s “an impressive step,” said Jack Szostak (opens a new tab), who studies the origins of life at the University of Chicago and was not involved in the research. “I don’t know of any other effort to put together an artificial cell from biological components that has progressed so far.” read more
