Abu Dhabi warns of fire risks from furniture with built-in chargers

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has warned that modern furniture equipped with built-in electrical chargers is emerging as a significant cause of house fires, urging residents to follow strict safety precautions.The authority said items such as sofas and smart tables with integrated charging units, while designed to enhance convenience, have become potential fire hazards due to manufacturing defects and improper use.Rising safety concernsIn a statement, the authority highlighted that these technologies, although useful in daily life, can pose serious risks if not handled correctly, particularly due to the possibility of electrical short circuits.Residents were advised to avoid leaving devices charging for extended periods, especially while sleeping or when away from home. Regular inspection of cables is also essential, with immediate discontinuation of use if overheating or damage is detected.The authority further cautioned against charging high-power devices such as laptops through built-in furniture outlets.Preventive measuresOfficials stressed the importance of ensuring that furniture is fitted with cables and electrical components approved by relevant authorities. Any signs of burning smells or changes in plug colour should prompt immediate disconnection and inspection.The authority emphasised that advances in technology should not come at the expense of adhering to basic safety rules.It also reiterated the importance of installing and maintaining home smoke detection systems, including the Hassantuk system (a smart fire and life safety monitoring system launched by the Ministry of Interior in partnership with Civil Defence), and urged the public to contact emergency services via 999 in the event of smoke or electrical faults.Summer safety campaignThe warning comes as part of broader awareness efforts under the “Summer in Safety” campaign, launched by Abu Dhabi Police and the Civil Defence Authority. Now in its seventh edition, the campaign will run until 30 August.The initiative focuses on raising awareness of preventive behaviours to protect lives and property during the summer months. It includes guidance for families, such as supervising children around swimming pools and avoiding leaving them unattended in vehicles.Civil Defence continues to conduct awareness programmes and field initiatives to reinforce fire prevention practices and promote safety across homes, workplaces and public facilities.Authorities urged all members of the community to support these efforts by adhering to safety requirements, noting that preventive behaviour remains the first line of defence in protecting lives and property.
