Their remains were found at 3 p.m. on Sunday by a Union Pacific employee tasked with transferring the contents of carts in Laredo, a city on the Mexican border, before they are sent north, police said. The identities of the deceased and the circumstances of how they died remain unknown.
Laredo sits on the bank of the Rio Grande, directly across from the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo. Union Pacific spokesperson Daryl Bjoraas said in a statement, “Union Pacific is saddened by this incident and is working closely with law enforcement to investigate.” According to the New York Times, officials have not confirmed whether the people found inside the car were migrants trying to cross the border.
