Today, July 10, is National Kitten Day and in honor of the holiday, we are thrilled to announce a significant achievement of caring for 15,000 kittens through the ASPCA Kitten Foster Program in Los Angeles. This program relies on the generosity of foster caregivers who provide lifesaving care to kittens in need. This milestone comes during the height of feline breeding season, also known as kitten season, a time of year when shelters nationwide are overwhelmed with vulnerable, newborn cats. The 15,000th kitten, Juno, was brought into the Los Angeles County Animal Care Center, Baldwin Park by a Good Samaritan. At roughly three months old, this partially blind kitten was in need of medical support. To get the care she needed, the Animal Care Center requested our help. After being transferred into our care, Juno was put into a foster home, where her foster caregiver provided unwavering support. Now, Juno is thriving in her foster home and has even been paired with a helper kitten to help her navigate the world with limited vision. Our staff is currently monitoring her eyes, which may require surgery to help prevent further infection and relieve any potential pain.“Every kitten deserves a chance to thrive,” said Hella Tyler, director of foster care for the Los Angeles feline programs. “Reaching 15,000 kittens rescued through our Los Angeles Foster Program is more than a milestone, it’s 15,000 toe beans and little heart beats that have been given hope, care and the opportunity for a brighter future. This is all made possible by our incredible dedication of our foster volunteers and community — we are so grateful!” Right now, our Los Angeles Foster Program is in urgent need of specialized foster caregivers, willing to help care for sick kittens or provide frequent bottle-feeding. Learn more about how you can foster kittens in Los Angeles! Alternatively, if you’re in New York City and want to foster kittens, get more information here or find a shelter near you. The Best

If I didn’t like him before (I did) I would love him now: Mamdani’s administration just funded New York City’s first-ever pet food pantry program. 750,000 in the FY2027 budget, specifically to help pet owners who can’t afford food for their animals. Another 750,000 goes toward affordable spay/neuter services. 1.5 million total, aimed at keeping people and their pets together. Here’s why it matters: NYC animal shelters took in over 16,000 animals last year. Nearly 10,000 were strays. Another 6,500 were owner surrenders — people who loved their pets but couldn’t afford to feed them or get them basic vet care, and had to give them up. Animal welfare advocates had been pushing for this for years, asking for 15.3 million to fully fund pantries, spay/neuter clinics in every borough, and a real animal welfare office. They got a fraction of the ask, But it’s the first time the city has put dedicated dollars behind the idea at all. No family should have to choose between rent and feeding their family — pets included. This is a start.

These Beautiful Baby Bunnies Came Too Close for Comfort

Via South Essex Wildlife Hospital, which writes:It was very narrow escape for these little rabbit kits... With their mum missing, their warren had been raided by magpies, leaving their two siblings critically injured. Although our vet team tried their best, the damage done was just too much Thankfully, these two had escaped major injury, but they were far from out of the woods. Dehydrated, cold, lethargic and hungry, they were clearly missing mum and Alda and Tom set to work trying to stabilise them. With warmth, fluid therapy and feeding with a special critical recovery solution, they slowly started to come back to us and, by the end of the day, they were looking SO much brighter! Now under the care of rabbit orphan feeder, Sally, they are making great progress. It's going to take quite a bit of work, but we hope this lucky pair can return to the wild once fully developed.
