Vote counting is underway in four Indian states and one union territory, in a key test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP. More than 170 million people were registered to vote, although opposition parties claim millions were unfairly denied the right to cast ballots. Results are being tallied in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the federal territory of Puducherry.
The elections are being closely watched as an early measure of support for Modi ahead of India’s 2029 general election. Al Jazeera’s Neha Poonia is monitoring developments from New Delhi, India.
