San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will not return to Game 2 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers after entering concussion protocol Tuesday. He was hurt early in the second quarter. Wembanyama was driving to the basket against Blazers guard Jrue Holiday when he was fouled, lost his footing and fell forward, striking his head on the floor.

He remained down briefly, appeared disoriented while attempting to rise and was ultimately escorted to the locker room for evaluation. Spurs general manager Brian Wright accompanied him. The team ruled him out shortly after Wright returned to the court. It's more than a basketball game for us, so I was just trying to check on my brother, Stephon Castle told NBC's Zora Stephenson at halftime. Under NBA concussion protocol, any player showing concussion symptoms must be removed immediately and evaluated in a distraction-free environment. A physician must also review video of the incident before any return to play is permitted. Should Wembanyama receive a formal concussion diagnosis, league rules bar him from playing for a minimum of 48 hours. Game 3 is scheduled for Friday in Portland. The timing is critical for San Antonio. Wembanyama posted 35 points in Sunday's Game 1 victory and was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year on Monday. Wembanyama sat out 18 regular-season games this year, including all three matchups against Portland. San Antonio went 12-6 without him in the lineup.
