Donald Trump says he will discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with China’s President Xi Jinping, who wants Washington to stop them. Taiwan approved about $25bn in extra defence spending for US weapons last week. Taiwan says it trusts US ties, but hopes there will be no “surprises” in Trump’s meetings with Xi, scheduled for May 14 and 15.
