Taxpayers slugged $6 billion to cover Labor's renewable energy mess

Sky News political contributor Chris Uhlmann claims soaring power prices forced the Albanese government to spend billions subsidising electricity bills after its renewable energy promises fell short. “The greatest threat to growth and productivity is the ever-rising cost of energy,” Mr Uhlmann said. “The Albanese government made a pledge in December 2021 when it unveiled its plan to hit 82 per cent renewable generation on the eastern electricity grid by 2030. “That promise was so wide of the mark that the Commonwealth spent over $6 billion subsidising power bills as electricity prices soared. “Energy is the ability to do work. So, energy is not part of the economy. Energy is the economy, and we are now in the middle of a dangerous economic experiment.”
