Sky is working on a redesigned Sky Go app, which it hopes to release later this year. The companion app, which is likely to launch on iOS and Android, will offer Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q viewers a new way to watch their favourite shows, films, sports fixtures, and manage set-top boxes remotely. Sky Go made its debut back in 2011, replacing an earlier effort dubbed Sky Player, and offering a way for subscribers to stream live channels when out and about. Following the launch of Sky Q, the broadcaster updated the iPhone, iPad, and Android apps with the ability to download recordings from the set-top box so you can watch offline on a commute or flight. It also became a way to remotely schedule recordings on Sky Q – setting reminders, a one-off recording, or so-called Series Link to automatically record the entire season of a particular show.Progress within your favourite show is synchronised across Sky Q, Sky Q Mini boxes, and any devices signed in with your Sky Go app. You can pause an episode of your favourite show on the television in one room at home, and pick up on your iPad in another, or resume the next morning on your commute from a Samsung phone. Start watching exclusive Sky TV shows and Netflix on Sky Stream for just £15 Sky Stream has never been this affordable. The broadcaster has just launched an affordable new bundle of channels and on-demand services, dubbed TV Essentials. It includes its plug-and-play Sky Stream box, over 100 live channels including Sky Atlantic — the exclusive home of shows like Game of Thrones, And Just Like That, and The White Lotus. You'll also find a subscription to Netflix and Discovery+ included too and can upgrade to Sky Cinema and Sky Sports at an extra cost. Sky Stream £15 GET THE DEAL It was clever stuff — and something that was truly unique over a decade ago when it launched. But a lot has changed since then. Sky Glass TVs and Sky Stream both rely on custom-designed SkyOS, which was built from the ground up to juggle live television channels, on-demand boxsets, and streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+, to name just a few, don't work with Sky Go in the same way as Sky Q. For example, It's not possible to add shows, upcoming sports fixtures, or films to your Playlist — the equivalent of Sky Q's Recordings — remotely via Sky Go.In the 15 years since Sky Go was introduced, the television landscape has changed pretty dramatically. Being able to tune in to live broadcasts or access on-demand boxsets recorded from Sky TV channels anywhere used to be an incredible novelty. However, these days, most broadcasters already offer a pretty comprehensive mobile app that lets you instantly watch on-demand and live versions of shows. As such, it was unclear whether Sky thought it was necessary to even create a solution like Sky Go for its streaming-only solutions like Glass and Stream.Do you want another app installed on your iPhone or Android to unlock these features? But Paolo Pescatore, a respected consumer technology and media analyst at PP Foresight, told GB News: Sky Go hasn't received any love and feels a bit dated. The service needs a refresh and is a key to Sky's ability to serve customers outside the home. The most likely next step is for Sky Go to become far more than a basic viewing app. Expect smarter personalisation, better syncing across Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Q, and a more seamless experience when moving between devices.Mr Pescatore believes the recent announcement about a new bundle with Disney+ and HBO Max with Sky Ultimate TV provides a clue about the direction this ground-up redesign will take. He explained: In light of the latest move to bundle a slew of streaming services, these are not available on the Sky Go app. Users must download each of the respective streaming apps. This is about securing commercial deals rather than enhancing the app interface. A perfect example of how this can work in practice is with CANAL+ in France.CANAL+ integrates third-party platforms — like Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video — into a single platform, so you can bounce between live streams from linear channels, on-demand boxsets, and must-binge shows from streamers. It also includes individual user profiles, including kids profiles, with personalisation based on viewing history for every member, with playback able to resume across your devices. While profiles are available on SkyOS, this doesn't (yet) carry over to Sky Go. In short, Canal+ is a modern, all-in-one streaming platform, whereas Sky Go is still designed to be a companion app for Sky Q boxes to use from time-to-time when you leave home and want to finish watching a particular show.Mr Pescatore adds: Sport is where the biggest opportunity lies. There is also room for improvement around downloads, travel use, accessibility and device flexibility. All of these would make the app feel more modern and better aligned with how people actually watch. The bigger point is this: Sky Go should evolve into a true companion to the wider Sky ecosystem. If done well, it could become a far stickier and more valuable part of the customer experience rather than simply an add-on app.Stay tuned to GBN Tech ahead of the Sky Go relaunch later this year.
