It requires productivity and worker wellbeing to advance together,” Charles Jr said on May 19 during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.The minister divulged that his ministry has intensified engagement with stakeholders across the sector regarding labour relations, workplace wellness, occupational health and workforce development.“As the sector continues to evolve, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security remains committed to ensuring that workplace standards evolve alongside economic growth.“To reinforce these efforts, the ministry will establish the SAFE task force to strengthen workplace oversight, compliance engagement, employee welfare and responsible labour practices within the sector,” he said.The SAFE task force will support strengthened worker engagement; workplace wellness initiatives; labour rights sensitisation; mediation and labour relations support; and improved collaboration among government, employers and workers.The ministry will also undertake a BPO workforce wellness review to assess emerging workplace trends, workforce concerns and areas requiring collaborative policy attention and improvement.Charles Jr said the ministry intends to introduce an MLSS Decent Work Partnership Recognition Programme aimed at encouraging and recognising strong labour and workplace practices within the BPO sector and other major employment industries. The recognition framework will acknowledge employers demonstrating responsible labour practices, strong worker wellness systems, investment in training and workforce development, opportunities for career mobility and advancement, and meaningful worker engagement initiatives.The labour minister told Parliament that Jamaica’s long-term competitiveness will be strongest where innovation, productivity and worker dignity advance together.He said that as Jamaica modernises its labour environment, “We remain guided by a simple principle — that the future of work must not become a future of insecurity. It must become a future of opportunity, protection and advancement for the Jamaican people.”“As industries expand and reconstruction accelerates, worker protection and workplace safety must remain central to national development,” he stated.Charles Jr said the BPO sector remains one of Jamaica’s most important employment industries and continues to create opportunities for thousands of Jamaicans, particularly young people entering the workforce.
