NDIS to receive biggest overhaul since it was launched

The Albanese government is warning states they could face billions in extra costs if they refuse to help rein in the NDIS as the scheme is becoming financially unsustainable. The scheme has been flagged as a key focus for savings in next month’s federal budget, already costing more than $50 billion a year. Treasurer Jim Chalmers will today tell state counterparts they must sign up to the Thriving Kids Program to help slow growth in the scheme to five per cent or lower, or risk being liable for rising costs.
On Wednesday, Health Minister Mark Butler is expected to unveil major changes to eligibility and plan budgets in what would be the biggest overhaul of the NDIS since it was launched 13 years ago.
