Mark Cuban Admits He Tried To Buy Back Mavericks

Cuban sold 73 of the team to the family of Miriam Adelson in December 2023 and has retained a 27 stake. However, the sale terms permit the Adelsons to purchase an additional 20 within four years, which would reduce Cuban's share to just 7. Earlier this year, a group of outside investors approached Cuban about partnering on a potential buyback. Cuban said he told them upfront that he doubted it would succeed. What happened was a bunch of people had contacted me; they weren't happy with the way things were, Cuban said. And I was like, 'Look, if you can get them to sell, I would be more than happy to contribute my equity, et cetera, et cetera, and help.' But I didn't expect that to materialize. I told them I didn't think it would happen, that I didn't think the Adelsons had any interest in selling. And they don't. The Adelson family responded to earlier reports of a potential buyback with a firm statement. The team is not for sale and the families look forward to expanding their ownership stake over time, the family said. Cuban's frustration with the franchise's direction has been evident since the Adelsons traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025. He previously stated on the Intersections podcast that he regretted not the sale itself, but the choice of buyer. I don't regret selling, Cuban said. I regret who I sold to. I made a lot of mistakes in the process, and I'll leave it at that. The 67-year-old did not rule out purchasing another NBA team, though he said geography and competitive bidding would present obstacles.
