Kitten Arrives at the Shelter All Alone, Meets a Resident Cat Who ‘Mentors’ Him Before His Wish Comes True

When Nikki, an experienced foster with Hearts Alive Village, welcomed him into her home, she knew the road ahead would require patience and round-the-clock care. Too small to eat on his own, Charlie relied on bottle feeding, day and night, to get the nutrients he needed to hit every milestone.Nikki never wavered. And slowly, steadily, Charlie began to grow. As he got older and started to scoot around more, he started to have more energy,” Nikki told Love Meow. “Kittens that are single without their mates view their caretaker as their littermate. It’s important to redirect their behavior so they don’t get used to biting hands.”Nikki knew just the feline friend who could help. Wallace, it's fair to say, was not immediately impressed. When Wallace met baby Charlie he was a hissy grump, so we're taking it slow, Nikki shared. Supervised short visits only. Before long, he was allogrooming Charlie, a form of social grooming that cats use to show affection, build trust, and strengthen their bonds with one another. For Nikki, it was a moment she won't forget.My foster mama heart was exploding, she said. My big boy Wallace and my itty bitty Charlie. At four weeks old, he graduated to a big boy playpen, a whole new world of toys to chase and corners to explore.He developed his favorite pastimes quickly: racing around his play area, batting at everything in sight, and following Nikki from the bathroom to the kitchen like a tiny, determined shadow.
