Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has arrived in Australia for her first official visit since taking office. She was greeted at Canberra airport by Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will meet Ms Takaichi for the Australia-Japan Annual Leaders' meeting on Monday. Talks are expected to focus on security, energy and countering China’s influence in the region.
It comes as Australia is being called to consider a Plan B to the AUKUS submarine deal. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a former senior defence official says the government should explore leasing submarines from Japan if the current plan runs into delays.
