The Israeli navy has reportedly begun intercepting the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near Greece late Wednesday as the vessels headed toward Gaza in an attempt to break the blockade on the enclave. “Communications with 11 vessels have been lost, and Israeli media claims that 7 boats have been intercepted. Governments must act now to protect the flotilla,” organisers said.

Activists aboard the flotilla said warships and frigates were approaching the vessels while communications were being jammed. They also reported drones flying overhead. Israeli Army Radio said naval forces had begun taking control of flotilla vessels bound for Gaza far from Israel’s coast, near the Greek island of Crete. The move came hours after Hebrew media reported that Israel was preparing to intercept the flotilla, which includes around 100 boats in total carrying nearly 1,000 activists from several countries. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reportedly imposed sanctions on the flotilla earlier this week, claiming it was organised by a “Hamas terrorist organization in collaboration with additional international organizations under the guise of a humanitarian aid convoy,” according to Israeli media reports.
