India braces for fertiliser shortages amid trade disruptions

Farmers in India fear the US-Israeli war on Iran will lead to a shortage of fertilisers. India is the world’s second-largest consumer, using more than 60 million tonnes of fertiliser a year in 2025. Most of it comes from Gulf countries and is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday the government announced a 465 million-dollar increase in subsidies to protect farmers.
