‘Housing policy lie’: CGT and negative gearing changes spark fierce backlash

Sky News host Paul Murray launches an attack on the Albanese government over negative gearing and Capital Gains Tax changes in the 2026 budget. “The total changes when it comes to negative gearing will eventually make the government $77 billion,” Mr Murray said. “There is nothing in this document that is going to take the average or median house price … and reduce it.
“Whatever the difference between what you paid for it and what you sell, there’s going to be a 30 per cent tax on that. “The tax system only helps the people who can afford or have the time to wait for something off the plan. That is the lie at the heart of the housing policy.”
