Portal Hello: Moustapha Thiam April 28th, 2026 at 4:42 PM Matt EM April 28th, 2026 at 4:42 PM [Michigan Men's Basketball] Dusty May strengthened Michigan's reputation as Big Man U by adding a premier portal big for the third consecutive year with the addition of Cincinnati transfer Moustapha Thiam. With the departure of Aday Mara, the Wolverines had a gaping hole with respect to rim protection and Thiam is about as good as it gets for a replacement.

I scouted five full games of Moustapha against great competition in Kansas, Arizona, Louisville, Iowa State and Texas Tech.............this is a massive pickup, both literally and figuratively, and one which should allow Michigan to contend for another B10 title. SCOUTING (Defense)Thiam's biggest value comes via rim protection, and that is precisely what Dusty May needs. Moustapha had a 6.8 block rate for the season, though it dropped off to 4.1 against top-50 opponents. I've become less consumed with raw block rates in recent years, because it doesn't necessarily capture the full scope of rim protection/deterrence. And that holds true for Thiam specifically, as opponents shot 7.9 worse at the rim with him on the court. The ability to block/alter shots at the rim immediately pops on film as you can see below: But Moustapha's impact isn't restricted to blocking/altering shots, opposing players are so fearful of getting their shots blocked that they avoid rim attempts entirely at times when Moustapha is looming on the backend. Thiam's mere presence forces opponents into wild passes, turnovers and busted possessions as we see in the clip below. It can't be quantified, but this is elite disruption that blows up opposing offenses. The possession against Texas Tech below perhaps best captures Moustapha's defensive rim prowess. A very good shotblocker that is a superb rim deterrent. And that is how one grades out in the 98th percentile for overall rim protection despite a 76th percentile block rate. Blocks and block rate simply don't capture the deterrent effect. [After THE JUMP: Full Scouting Report]Thiam has a good agility for a 7'2 behemoth, and he flashed some ability to carry out show + recover coverage against ballscreens. But given Dusty May's strong preference for drop coverage from his Centers, it simply wasn't worth it to breakdown film when Moustapha is going to be in drop coverage as an anchor 90 of the time with Michigan. Thiam's job for the Wolverines is very simple...........put a lid on the rim. Moustapha is a good, not great, defensive rebounder. A 20.4 DReb rate backs that up, though it drops to 17.1 versus top-50 competition. But Thiam isn't necessarily the most physical or consistent in terms of giving multiple efforts on the defensive glass or rebounding outside of his frame. It's admittedly a bit nitpicky/critical, but I left film review wanting a bit more from a rebounding perspective. That said, Thiam provides a good floor cleaning up the defensive glass through sheer size/length. SCOUTING (Offense)Moustapha's best attribute offensively is undoubtedly back-to-the-basket scoring. Thiam's touch on the jumphook is absolutely incredible and that's not hyperbole. For context, he converted 61.8 of attempts from 7-9 feet away this season(34 attempts is no small sample given the shot type). That is absurd to be candid. He likely has the best ambidextrous touch we've ever seen from a Michigan center. I mean, look at this: Overall, Moustapha shot 55.2 from short mid with the Bearcats. That doesn't even seem possible for a college big. What's generally accepted as an inefficient shot, is anything but for Thiam.Another facet that has become increasingly important for the bigs playing for Dusty May is the ability to change ends with pace. Michigan likes to play with tempo and we've seen Goldin/Wolf/Tschetter/Mara all make meaningful strides with their ability to run the floor. Moustapha Thiam is simply on another level from the aforementioned bigs, his straight-line speed at 7'2 is certainly an anomaly as we can see in this clip against Kansas. Flory Bidunga is an elite athlete and Thiam starts out 3-4 feet behind before dusting him with a burst of speed that had me like wow. Changing ends with speed was a consistent strength of Moustapha in all five games I viewed, and I fully expect that to translate to Ann Arbor. It's fitting that the clip above ends in a made triple for Thiam, as we'll transition to the floorspacing element. Shooting 28.8 from three on relatively low-volume (52 attempts) certainly isn't world-beating stuff, but it is respectable for a 20-year old college big. The lower body balance is outstanding for a 7'2 kid and the mechanics are generally the same in each attempt. I won't pretend that Moustapha will be the second coming of Moritz Wagner, as his release is far too slow to be a volume shooter from distance. But there's a world where Thiam is a 33 shooter on 2-2.5 attempts per game to exploit drop coverage. Thiam is good on the offensive glass. An 8.8 OReb rate that jumps all the way to 11.5 against top-50 opponents. Again, the sheer size/length provides inherent advantages that lead to results. But much like the defensive glass, I do think Moustapha can be a bit more active with his physicality and ball pursuit in terms of rebounding outside of his frame. But as I mentioned above, this can be considered critical/nitpicky.Thiam isn't much of playmaker for others and I wouldn't expect him to be that with Michigan. But I wouldn't necessarily say he's inept as a passer. There are some flashes of short-roll playmaking and out of doubles. He's never going to be an Aday Mara level playmaking hub, but perhaps he develops under Dusty May to become an average passer/playmaker for others. The biggest weakness for Moustapha is contact aversion. He's doesn't necessarily optimize the overwhelming size/length to punish opponents and go over/through them. This tendency is most notable with the low rim pressure/frequency rates. 9th percentile rim frequency and 5th percentile rim pressure is far too low for a 7'2 behemoth. Any time your 7'2 athletic big gets the ball within 5-6 feet from basket, you want him attempting to dunk any and everything rather than floaters. At his core, Thiam is a finesse player and he'll need get a bit more assertive to reach the next level in his development. The aversion to contact also shows up in his back-to-the-basket game. Nearly every post-up I viewed resulted in a jumphook or midrange fadeaway. And the distance was a large factor in the efficiency. As noted above Moustapha converted 55.2 of his short-mid attempts, but only 39.1 of his long-mid attempts. He's capable of making the long mid attempts as seen below, but it's not a great shot diet on volume. If you can push Thiam 10+ feet away from the basket, you've likely won the battle. Moustapha needs to trade in much of the long midrange jumphooks/fadeways in favor of burying defenders under the rim and finishing with authority. Less finesse and more brut force please.Perhaps the most glaring omission from my viewing was the absence of roll-man possessions. There were no more than five total roll-man scoring opportunities in the five games I viewed, and Thiam didn't fare well in that regard. Can't take much away from that given the low volume. I'd almost guarantee roll-man opportunities and efficiency will take a leap with Elliott Cadeau as his lead playmaker. PROJECTIONNot much projection necessary. Thiam slots in as Michigan's starting center that will play 25-30 minutes per game and likely score 13-16ppg. Defensively, Moustapha is going to provide good rim protection to the tune of 1.5ish blocks per game while grabbing 6-8 rebounds per night. We're not getting Aday Mara level rim protection (quite literally the best rim protector in the last decade), but more likely something approaching/slightly exceeding Vlad Goldin impact. Beyond the statistical projections, Thiam's biggest contribution to the team will be providing the foundation for a high-floor defense. As we saw with the defending National Champions last season, denying access to the rim is the most sustainable method of winning at the highest level. Having a rim-protecting anchor is precisely what allows Dusty May to have a 1-4 switching approach without real consequences. Moustapha Thiam provides a certain margin for error defensively that wouldn't be there otherwise. On the other end of the court, I'm inclined to think Moustapha functions much like Vlad Goldin on the 24-25 iteration of the Wolverines. High-volume back-to-the-basket player that is a scoring hub for the half-court offense as a self-creator. Where I think we see the biggest leap for Thiam comes via roll-man possessions and prowess. Dusty May is a heavy ballscreen coach at his core, and given Moustapha's size/athleticism/catch-radius, you can be certain Coach May is going to tap into that with a premier playmaker in Cadeau. From a lineup configuration, Thiam has the exact profile you want next to JP Estrella. Moustapha covers for Estrella's lack of rim protection and allows Coach May to roll-out lineups with multiple bigs to shrink the court defensively. Admittedly the fit takes a bit of projection because Estrella probably can't defend true wings, but having requisite size/length goes a long way in the game of basketball in 2026. With all that said, I'm inclined to think Moustapha Thiam is perhaps Michigan's best two-way player next season. If the roster is able to master Dusty May's system and generate chemistry, Moustapha is likely toing to be a first/second team B10 type player. He's at the intersection of size/length/talent/experience on what projects to be quality team that may contend for a B10 title. I'd much rather have Thiam affecting shots (by being tall and having a long wingspan) without giving up rebounding position, rather than chasing blocks. That was one of the reasons I thought Thiam was a better fit for Dusty's defense than Bidunga. Also ...Perhaps the most glaring omission from my viewing was the absence of roll-man possessionsI noticed the same thing. Cincinnati's offense was terrible (132 on Kenpom). It would've been tied for the 2nd worst offense in the B1G. Thiam was not put in a position to succeed. Additionally, Thiam is very young for his class. He finished the year strong. He was better in Big12 play (14.2 ppg. 7.2 rpg), than he was for the whole season (12.8 / 7.1). I think when you pair that with his age, the trajectory looks even better. For comparison, Mara was at 12/6.4 in B1G play. Just like I think steal rate is important for players away from the basket. But they are just 2 metrics. Affecting shots and staying in front of offensive players are also important, just harder to quantify. Otherwise, a a really nice combination of shot making and defense out of the portal. As we saw with Mara, being able to affect a shot is arguably more important than just blocking it, so I agree the raw number doesn't mean as much. Think of the restrictions that were on incoming players last season. I'd bet if we go back and look at Cadeau or Mara's incoming writeups, we probably would be surprised. And to be candid, that wasn't any genius on my end. After five minutes of film review on Aday I knew he was an NBA lottery pick.............Cronin just couldn't stand that his motor didn't run high at all times.Mick Cronin fumbling Mara is one of the biggest gifts in Michigan basketball history.Thiam is a really good player, but not sure I see top-10 NBA lottery pick if I'm being candid. Didn't take it that way at all.Moreso wanted to convey that is was fairly obvious that Aday was a pro with any sort of detailed film review. It just so happened that Mick Cronin is an idiot that functionally brought out the worst version of a lottery pick............which is hard to do.And the other point being: Thiam may very well be NBA material, but I'm not inclined to think he's Mara-level NBA material. But again, perhaps Coach May brings out the very best in Moustapha as he's done with Goldin/Wolf/Mara. The track record for bigs with Dusty is sort of irrefutable. Mara was awesome but I think that Thiam has more upside.1) His foul rate is much less so he should be able to be on the court for more minutes 2) He shows more athleticism than Mara. 3) more developed 3 point shotThiam's stats were better before transferring to Michigan than Mara's but of course Mara was playing for an interesting/possibly idiot coach at UCLA. But I want to walk everyone through a rough summary of how these things are evaluated with respect to bigs as it relates to the NBA:A) If athletic, how often/consistent does the athleticism manifest? B) Does said player need a runway/space in order for the athleticism to manifest? B) What type of athleticism manifests? Can said big explode vertically while backpedaling? Can said big play through contact/maintain balance?D) If said big is projected as an anchor big, What is the timing like on contests? E) Does said big give multiple efforts/jumps with respect to ball pursuit when rebounding? F) Is there potential to be an efficient half-court offensive engine as both a B2B scorer and facilatator? Certainly more evaluation facets that what I have listed above, but these are definitely prominent evaluation points. My take was that there were some legitimate concerns regarding him (as there are with Thiam), which you pointed out. And obviously Coach May then proceeded to polish the diamond in the rough to a brilliance none of us quite expected. I am hoping for similar outcomes with Thiam, and that UM becomes 7-foot-2 U! If I'm Dusty I have those two hanging out, rooming together, twin beds, passing the ball back and forth before they go to sleep. Physical confidence and strength are what I saw Mara really coming out of the year with--even as you worried on the front end that he might be worn out come March. . . He is a much better pure athlete than Mara. Hopefully this means less early foul trouble for our C position. No one thought Mara and Morez were capable of what they were. Few people thought they would both start, myself included. However I have number one learned from that, and number 2 believe that even though Thiam isn't viewed right now as a 1st round pick he is viewed higher than either Mara or Morez was at this time last year. And with Estrella, he is just simply a perfect fit with our team, built from the same mold. I don't known why we wouldn't expect this team to be top 10 nationally, at least. IN which case may contend for a BIG title is way too conservative. Its ok for our expectations to be high. The other reason I am so high on this team, is that I expect our team to be more balanced in terms of wing/backcourt scoring. I fully expect Trey to be 1st team BIG. So having our 3 front court players account for nearly all of our points isn't necessary moving forward. Thiam with less fouling could be equal to Mara overall. Cadeau should be better in year 2 at Michigan, Trey is now a 5 star sophomore, Estralla's offensive game looks more polished than Moretz's, Liburd McCoy are very athletic at the 3-I'm not saying this team will be better than the best college basketball team in 20+ years, but there is a greater than 0 chance that it will be. This past year, at least one of Mara or Morez was in the game at almost all times, whereas Costello and Reed haven't shown a lot of rim protection (at least as yet). Having 40 minutes a game of elite rim protection was part of the secret sauce that put the team to such a high level this year.
