Govt Approves MSP Support Of Over Rs 4,886 Crore for Farmers New Delhi, May 6 (KNN) The Union Government has approved fresh procurement measures aimed at ensuring remunerative prices for farmers and preventing distress sales, with a combined Minimum Support Price (MSP) support exceeding Rs 4,886 crore. Under the decision, the government has sanctioned procurement of 9,023 metric tonnes of sunflower in Karnataka for the Rabi 2026 season under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
The approval, valued at over Rs 69.66 crore, is expected to help farmers secure assured prices amid volatile market conditions and reduce the likelihood of distress sales. In a separate move, the Centre has increased the procurement ceiling for gram in Maharashtra to 8.19 lakh metric tonnes for the Rabi 2025–26 season. The revised limit carries an MSP value of over Rs 4,816.80 crore, significantly expanding the scope of government procurement operations in the state. The procurement window for gram has also been extended by 30 days until May 29, 2026, allowing more farmers to participate in MSP operations and benefit from assured pricing mechanisms. Officials indicated that the decisions are part of broader efforts to stabilise farm incomes by strengthening procurement systems and ensuring timely market intervention. By expanding procurement limits and timelines, the government aims to create a more predictable environment for farmers, particularly during periods of price volatility. The measures are expected to provide direct financial relief while reinforcing confidence in the MSP framework, which remains a central pillar of India’s agricultural policy for income assurance and market support.
