EU urges US to reinstate trade deal tariffs

A key concern for the EU remains U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to raise tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25 percent, according to Sefcovic. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that if a 25-percent U.S. tariff were imposed on EU cars, the bloc should activate its anti-coercion instruments, denouncing what he described as threats of destabilization, according to French news channel BFM TV. Agreements that have been signed must be respected, said Macron, adding that if any country were threatened with tariffs, the EU has equipped itself with instruments that would need to be activated. Under the EU-U.S. trade deal reached in July 2025, the EU would suspend tariffs on all U.S. industrial products and introduce tariff-rate quotas for a wide range of U.S. agri-food products entering the EU market. In return, the United States would apply a 15-percent import tariff on most EU goods.
